Jimbog1964: and I simply can't
believe that Mr. Nike would sanction their top level irons making their top
level ball look crap.
Never mind Nike, WGT must be off their rocker with a 300 per
sleeve cost difference and the 81's going to the bottom of the bag. Guys must
be banging these things around like crazy trying to map these balls, and will
soon, like some of us, just give up on those balls all together.
Yep, but nothing here is surprising me any more. I think they rushed these out without proper testing same same as the $5 note pad that has pages stuck together.
mkg335: Credit where it's due...a
short time after the new irons came out, YJ was extolling the merits of the L33
Cally with these clubs.
Absolutely and well played YJ.
The only thing I have ever had against it was it's slight lack of distance compared to the Nike L81. Of course the ability of that Nike to stop quicker on elevated greens was nice to. Now at BP I think you would only care on #5 and back pin #15 IMO. Any one that used the HL Nike accepted a big price premium for really marginal differences most of the time, apart from arguably the slower meter which was a nice to have for many.
I would say that teamed with the R11 irons the L81 Nike ball was a superb combination that accepted spin readily when needed, had consistent yardage, and did not deviate width wise overly because of it. Try using that L81 Nike ball with the new clubs, and well...........what this is all about.
Strangely though play the L33 Cally with these new L97 Nike irons, and apart from meter speed (and arguably not all that much in it because the Nikes are slower anyway) the L33 Cally played the very same around Beth B9, FBS all the way through to no spin, as the R11s did with the L81 Nike ball. Weird???
mkg335: I guess one could keep both
the Nike and Cally on hand and equip them according to the particular venue one
is playing...horses for courses. For
example, use the Cally at Merion and Oly, where accuracy trumps distance, and
use the Nike at a more forgiving track like St A or RSG. Might favor the Nike at BPB because of its
stopping power on elevated greens, too.
If the L71 Nike ball plays exact same yardage, all spins as the L33 Cally L97 iron wise why not.
This is confusing the hell out of me in all honesty. I stuck with the expensive Nike balls when using the R11 irons, as much as anything, because I felt I had them mapped for all spins, and a few notes for some holes. Any time I ever went to the L33 Cally then, it played different enough to the expensive L81 Nike ball that I felt I would have needed to map everything again carry wise, and also learn roll out more.
Play the L33 Cally with the New Nike irons, meter speed aside, it's the L81 Nike ball incarnate at least at BPB B9??? Superb experience but Weird??
Play the HL expensive L81 Nike Ball with the New Hl Nike L97 VR irons, and it's all unpredictable being kind. OK it's a crap experience!
