For me I looked at it like this, the combination of only having two clubs to choose from, either 225 or 240 ish, would force players to hit their seconds shots using long irons on some holes.  This will in turn cause longer putts since the ball is harder to stop.  Perfect example is #18.  Hitting a 280 drive on that hole gives you a chance to reach the green in two.  Having to hit a 3 wood.... not so much.

Having to hit longer irons does not necessarily lead to longer putts. It's holes like 13 with the back pin where, whatever you do aside from fluking a putt, you run back down the green 30ft away - that's what leads to longer putts. Set this tournament up without crazy greens and you'd still see -5s and -6s I'd think. 18 is the only hole where there is a big effect.

I will set up exactly the same first thing next week with regular greens and let's see what happens.  I would be surprised to see that low.  I would think -3 or -4.  Also remember Merion is a shorter course.  So maybe one of the longer ones would be more difficult.

    To clarify:

I used the driver and it took away my 3w, so I only had irons left... Mr shoe laughed at me and it made me sad, so I rage quit on him.

Don't sorry, we both know I can get u by other means!

I hadn't forgot about the restricted equipment Tourney idea. Been waiting to test out something new. I clicked on Play with my regular driver to test that out and it doesn't let us play with anything other than the Starter.

Overall toughness I give it a Meh.  I shot a 40 with relative ease. Using the 3 wood negated the loss of the driver so that wasn't much of a deal. The "Insane Fast" greens were named properly for sure. Wish it was Uneven Lies so the real teeth of the fairways would have come out.

Lots of fun but wish it was the full 18 holes and in UL for sure. Icon quit? Was it too easy for him and he got bored? ;)

    More, Harder, Anytime. :)))

Great Feedback.  Thank you.  This is just a first test run to get the feet wet on how players will shoot and react to this.  Next few weeks will be doing different variations until we have it dialed in a little more.

^ This. Find something long and painful then make it harder. No driver and Starter Ball so our clubs aren't slowed down, Uneven Lies plus the Insane Fast greens. Make it RSG with Heavy Wind as well please?

P.S. Ignore calls for regular green speeds!!! These are test Tourneys for Crash Test Dummies. Tough up a bit. ;)

lol, looks like the L69 RballZ might get an airing, maybe even the L32 R11s..

(not the old L79 meter freaks mind :) )

What about ppl who haven't got the 4 sets of clubs bought so far still in bag ?

I play the G20's instead of the top R11's for the much slower swing speed and less spin. Starter Ball is no problem at all to ding. :)))

I'd say the purpose of testing this restriction out is to find out what effect being 40yds shorter off the tee is. I know from my various halfwitted experiences of playing RGs with a bag full of wedges after forgetting to swap them out after CTTHs that not having a driver makes about 1-2 shots difference per 9. Playing on crazy speed greens at Merion makes about 4-5 shots difference even if you are lucky, so you are not going to be able to tell much about the effect of the restriction with greens like this.
