Yep YJ, that perception is based on my putting.  I suck at putting and reading the greens, so any roll out is not good for me.

I guess I should say I only play this game for FUN.  I don't take notes on paper, just what I can/can't remember.  I don't know how much 1/2 b.s. will slow the ball vs full b.s.  I don't have notes on how far my CG64 goes w/o, 1/2, full, 3/4 ect back spin.  To take these kind of note is not fun for me.

I don't use putter or shot pal.  I have taken the time to map my clubs using avatar movement only and not by hitting the club and getting actual yardage.  Again, not much fun for me.  Besides, I cant get enough dings to get good readings.  I do use a calculator for shots from the rough and putting.

I don't play practice rounds, just ranked rounds. 90% of which are multiple player games.  I like to play this game and other video games with other people and not by myself.

I don't practice my shots, or my putting.

I guess I'm just a seat of the pants golfer.  So, for me, I need to rely on less putting and using the flop vs chip or pitch seem to work for me.  Maybe when my average gets saturated and is not affected by bad rounds I will try the pitch, chip and punch more often.

    Thanks though.

Me, too. Nary a note in sight.  ;-)

I only chip at 5yards or lower, but that is still rare. I cut chipping out and pitching out. i just flop or full shot.  ...

    This!

The short game changed overnight with the introduction of the CG64. With it, you can stop  a pitch, and pitching virtually replaced flopping for a lot of us, as mentioned earlier. From 8 yards in, I'll chip if I'm close enough to the green. From 8-25, pitch unless it's an uphill shot out of a bunker. In that case I'll generally flop up to about 15 or so depending on % lie, otherwise punch. From 25-50 or so, the CG64 punch is deadly good, also as mentioned above.

Have had the Cleveland wedges a while now, and still struggle with getting the backspin right. It's easy to put too much on them, but they are amazing.

    .....

For instance, a CG64w pitches 17 and will roll to about 21 on flat, no spin. (Think of the shot from behind the pin on BPB4.)  With fbs that shot will stop at 17. With fts it will roll to 25. All of a sudden you have one shot that covers 8 yards with some serious accuracy! That's pretty powerful.  :-)

    Darn it YJ!

Now I'm going to have to go to a flat green and mulligan to heck and back a sleeve of balls! Thanks! ;-)

Don't suppose you can recommend a good flat green to practice on?

Chip, anything below 10 yards, in general.

    Pitch, 10-20, in general.

    Full, 20 and up.

I never use punch for less than 90% full meter. It just goes wherever it wants. I only use flop when I absolutely HAVE to drop it over a bunker. I LOVE using the 50 yd wedge with full swing on shots 20-30 yards. Seems to be very reliable to me.

Of course, limiting myself to so few of the available options MIGHT have something to do with the fact that my average has been over 67 since making Legend!

    Nah, must be VEM.

Pitching or chipping in is just another putt, of sorts.

This is why I prefer to pitch.  If you think of the distance the ball rolls out after landing as the putt part of the shot then a pitch is a shorter putt than a chip.

If the green is dead flat it's not really an issue but if you're between the front bunker and the green on Kiawah #2 for instance you can take out a lot of the tricky break by using a pitch.  A chip would have to roll through it all and that, for me anyway, makes the shot that bit more difficult.

A punch has a more controllable roll out once you start getting over 10 yards.  Since I'm looking to land close and roll out a yard or so it's the ideal shot for me.

Each to their own of course, that's just my 2s 6d.

    This sounds good.

Although chip and pitch shots should also be practiced on holes with elevation and lots of tricky rolls.

Just be careful with chip shots that are close to flag.  If high elevation to pin... the ball will bounce and stop well short if not hit hard enough,  leaving you with a tough putt.  Merion #5 is a good example
