I honestly cannot remember the last time I chipped.  Anyone else completely eliminate that shot from their repertoire?

I just won a match by chipping in off the fwy past the pin on CCC#11. 8 yards away 9" down on Champ greens. What other shot would you use there? Mine was a CG 64W, fbs, full swing.

The shot is too valuable in certain places where you have tough close up shots from just off the green.

I only chip at 5yards or lower, but that is still rare. I cut chipping out and pitching out. i just flop or full shot.

I punch shot that easily or even flop

I don't think I ever use the chip these days.  Under 10 yards I usually pitch, between 10 and 43 I use a punch.

I also very rarely use a flop, I know there are situations where it's the best shot but I use it so rarely I don't feel confident with it.

Inside of 8 yards CG64 is awesome chipped provided it's from fway at worst.

Particularly steep down hill and on champ greens (talking cleve only) the chip offers the most control.  Above that I would pitch almost invariably all the way up to 18/19 yards.  The spin on the cleves, controlled properly, practically renders the need to flop redundant.  More than one way to skin a cat, if ever there was one though, I fully accept.

    My 2cents:)

Probably would've flopped that.  Of my shots sub-30yds, 90% are flops and the occasional pitch thrown in.  I just prefer to limit my contact with greens.  The best shot in my arsenal, by far, is the full BS flop.  I would say from, inside of 25 yards, I can probably drop it within 5 feet of the pin 75% of the time with a precision flop.

I believe that by choosing to not chip, that you are taking away the best option you have in certain situations. For instance, the scenario that YankeeJim describes. That is a chipping situation for me all the way. I'm removing the flag, reading the break from where i anticipate the ball will land & roll to the hole, and looking to hole the shot. I've chipped in for birdie on a number of occasions taking that approach. Now of course it doesn't happen all that regularly, but it does happen. I've never tried to hit a punch shot from that close, so would be interested in knowing how to set that up. I have hit the flop though only as a last resort because of a severe downhill slope and/or because i couldn't get a good read on the break.

I also can't do the flop shot at all!

Ok I can do a belly flop into the pool...oh wait I'm not allowed to do that any more.

    Hahaha!

Never could chip. I always do the flop shot, which would be the complete opposite in real life. On slightly longer shots I would punch. Anything under 30yds and it's a flop shot. I''ve played it so many times now that I always hope to get it within 1yd. I admire anyone who can chip.
