Oakmont-Tourny Greens

  Am I the only one that struggles with putting at this place???  !00% FW hit 100% greens in regulation 9.9 feet ave distance to hole and I was 2 over!!!!  Just curious if others have troubles putting there...

  With stats like that you should be thankful you only have one thing to work on. LOL

  I'm new to tourney greens, but I'm loving the challenge.

  Hi guys.....Oakmont might be my favorite course.  Yes the tourney greens on them are brutal.  I can't even tell you how many 2ft putts I have & seen missed there.

  It takes a good while to learn to putt on them,  but with that said , if you can master to some extend Oakmont greens , you should be able to putt on any course.

  Just hang in there and practice on them and your putting game --as a whole will improve greatly

  If you think Tourney greens are tuff try putting on Oakmont with Champ greens....it's like putting on a sheet of ice.   :  )

  At Oakmont and most courses you not only need to be on the green in regulation, you also need to be on the right part of the green so your putt for bird or eagle has a minimum amount of break.

  Making notes, written or mental, about where on the green to be is a factor that aids scoring.

  Thanks All...I guess when it comes down to it, I really do not have many rounds there...especially with tourney greens...I just know that a 5 footer there is a bit more harrowing than some other places...While the break seems similar to that of other courses...the ball just does not seem to roll the same for me there....Thanks Apex,  I will try to play some more rounds there and put your advice to good use!!!

  It does for me, too, which I why I treat Oakmont greens with a little more respect for the speed than other courses. Oakmont was introduced for the Open here and qualifying was on Championship greens! IIRC, that was when that faster speed was introduced and you got 6 weeks of it on Oakmont.

  Since then, after the Open concluded, those greens supposedly calmed down and were being played on all of the speeds here but I never stopped playing them any different because the change in speeds for Legends just didn't seem that different. To this day I believe those greens are faster than any of the other greens with the same speeds.

  Thanks Jim...Not a great player at this point and have only been a player since November...My LINKS days helped me a bunch but NOT with the putting...I recognized something was off but just wanted to make sure it was just not my imagination...I have noticed that each course has its own "character"....this seems to be par for that course...thanks again to all that replied!!!

  I agree with Jim OAK greens are xtra fast- downhill- compared to Congo, Kia, BPB, for instance. Pretty comparable to OLY and Merion however. Like the latter 2 Open courses, the general rule is "stay below the hole" however below the hole isn't always "short of the hole" as is typical of Merion and Olympic= sometimes it is left, sometimes right, and even behind the hole on OAK. It is something you learn over time.

  Having said that TH, given your ranked rounds over 400, you should have better stats vis a vis putting in general. Only 1/3 One putts is quite low- u should be at 50% or better at this stage. I suggest you look for putting tutorials by the likes of StoneCold, Buggyyy, Notonthis and others in the forums and on youtube. They should help a great deal to understad the many subtleties of becoming a good putter, and those stats will improve quickly.

  I agree, way behind the curve on putting...has improved over time but still a long way to go...speed not as much a problem as the line...When I am on I can shoot low..but bad putting rounds easily outnumber the good ones....Iron Play is really the only reason I am where I am at with this game....

  Something I have not thought of...I have always used the 3 click meter as that is what I am comfortable with...easier or harder or the same in regards to putting ?  Just wondering...
