Hi WGT members! i was wondering if anyone know of an educated guess or what have you, as to how much distance is taken off a shot when your ball is in 20-25% rough....40-50% rough and so on and so forth. i guess you could use a 100 yard shot (never minding the wind or type of ball, if that's possible) as an example. i have a ballpark guesstimate but nothing of real confidence. Thanks so much, brad

depending how far out or close up you are and what type club you are using..... if i'm using a wedge 25% is maybe 2 or 3 yards or none   ...lol       with a wedge 40% is like add 10 depending how far you're out , whereas right off the green u may add next to nothing....50% is at least 15 sometimes with lots of roll at the end....soooo many factors...lol......try practicing the single player tournys with no wind to determine a 200 yard shot out of 40% versus a 150 yrd. shot ...same with 25%.....rough tends to make the ball roll a lil bit  and less height unless its a wedge...wedges are totally different than irons....a wedge may cut through rough like butter whereas an iron won't...practice is everything and there is no set amount...hope that helps

I see this as a truly great question. It seems to me that the clubs used and the ball used effect the possible shot choices a great deal. Along with shot type. It may be very mis-guided to offer any reliable "rule of thumb".

    Beaten by some seconds ;)

    @vajda: It's not that simple.

The effect depends on club brand and level, club number, type of shot, shot power, spin, probably ball, too.

And, ground conditions of identical designation differ between the courses - imagine MER#10, inside the dogleg :(

Why can't people give a guy an answer instead of acting like they are trying to help.

    Jeeez.

I would, but I have trouble with the long irons. I have the Nike irons, and use the Nike (L71) ball.

Now if you are using  the ATV 64 club with the L71 Nike ball

    Use full back spin

fairway & fringe +6 to the yardage / 50 gives you the % of power to hit

    20/25  +7

    30/40  +8

    40/50  +9

sorry this is using full shot with full back spin

When working this out for myself I started by halfing the lower % number and add that % to shot, then refined it to suit, through trial and error mostly. I play by feel mostly,so i dont have charts or notes, but it's somewhere to start.

Others will have far better systems they could share with you, I'm sure.

Lots of better players than i am, but for a rule of thumb, 20-25% takes 5 yards off, 30-40 10 yards.....anything deeper than that, it all depends on the club. Punch it and just get on the fairway.

No offence intended, only an eye-opener ;)

    Which level of ATV?

You missed out your Nike irons, each of them (which of the three sets BTW?)

And, repeat for Starter wedges and Tour-SD balls please - the OP's equipment.

I pray.  I ask the Lord Jesus for some divine intervention and sometimes he delivers and sometimes he doesn't.  Such is life, I 'spose.  :/
