    But don't over do it.

From the WGT News archives - Aug. 2010:

Studies have shown that 12 inches past the hole is the ideal speed at which to roll a putt. This will give the ball a good chance at running straight through the nooks and crannies around the hole that are not visible to the naked eye. It is also important to understand that for every 6 inches past this point, you lose 12% of the hole. The simple fact is that the ball will be rolling too fast to go in, hence the hole shrinks. The table below shows your chances of making the putt based on the speed it would roll past the hole:

    Feet past the hole
    1 foot
    1.5 feet
    2 feet
    2.5 feet
    3 feet
    3.5 feet
    4 feet
    4.5 feet
    5.5 feet
    Size of Hole
    perfect speed
12% decrease in the size of the hole
24% decrease in the size of the hole
36% decrease in the size of the hole
48% decrease in the size of the hole
60% decrease in the size of the hole
72% decrease in the size of the hole
96% decrease in the size of the hole
    Not makable!

Once you get beyond 5 feet past speed, you basically have no chance of holing the putt! Hopefully, this gets you thinking about speed when you putt. A significant portion of your practice time should be devoted to speed.

    Interesting!

Not sure about 5.5 ft being non-makable though.

Hitting the center of the cup you can still sink it with 7ft to much power, most putts 5ft or less I use 5ft power, even on champ greens, most novice players miss very short putts being to timid near the hole,,,where speed becomes critical for me is anything past 10ft.....

Just to be clear - They are talking about you hitting your putt strong enough for the ball to go 5.5 feet or more past the hole. Regardless the distance from the ball to the hole before the putt is attempted.

On the other hand there are 2 ft putts and a ton of 5-6ft putts you will be more likely to miss if you adhere to that theory and don't hit it hard enough to straighten it out, or 4ft past the hole most of the time...my 1 putts % improved a lot when I started to hit long putts with very little break hard, and short breakers even harder....

Maybe, they have Viagra for women now. A friend of my Father, his wife uses it, and the friend, goofing around, slipped three of her pills into my Father's coffee. He said he didn't feel funny or anything but he couldn't quit sucking his thumb.
