each balls have differant distant ratings eg 3, 3.5, 4 etc

What effect has that have eg does a ball which has a distant rating of say 3 travels 3 yards per 100 and a ball that has a distant rating of 4 travels 4 yards per 100?

Trying to work out my distance and the effect of each ball when callculating or does this make little differance.

    Thanks

Of course it makes a difference , thats why the ratings . Now it also varies with the clubs . The better the clubs and ball together , the better the results . The best way to play , is to pick one ball , and stick with it . I play the 33+ Cally ball , its all that I play .The only exception will be , the free promo balls , from tourneys , or gifted from WGT . So make it easy on your self . Get one ball and stick with it , and it will make your game easier .

    +1 Lonnie

Trying to reply to the question as I understand it,

there is no math connection between the numbered "amount" of an effect. 2 ist not one more or twice as much as 1,

    but it's better.

Until now 5 was the highest rating which also would not mean "perfect", 100% but "best available" which may change to larger numbers.

Distance results in part according to the trajectory a club imparts on the ball.

All else being equal, a driver rated at 3 that has a low trajectory will deliver a distance somewhat different than a driver rated at 3 that delivers a high trajectory.

Spot on Lonnie.  Changing balls regularly means you have to learn how each different one plays, how far it goes, how much it spins and so on.  Either too much hard work or too much left to chance.

I also play the L33 Cally, apart from alt shot when I might use a novelty ball.

    It's worth saying again:

I agree with Lonnie - chose a ball you can afford and stick with it.

Obviously the better the attributes the better but it is all about KNOWING exactly what your ball can do with the various spin changes.

Now here is the hypocritical part - I usually use the Lvl33 Cally but still have some slow meter Lvl 1 Callies in my bag. If I use them on a hundred yard approach I will come up about 6 yards short. Fine if I knew exactly but I don't, so do not use them.

So whatever ball you decide to use, map it to know what the ball can do with all your clubs and various spin applied.

Then the only other time I change is when my timing is so bad I will revert to a Max ball - useless hunks of black dung but they do have a slow meter - problem is they react like a hockey puck on ice with the spin - ie shocking.

Thanks all for your response, much appreciated.

Looks like sticking to 1 ball type and getting to know how that ball “works” is the go.

    Thanks again.

Since you are a TM at level 88 with a 66.68 ave., you certainly have tried various balls and have done well with them. I tend to do things a lot differently than most of the other responders to this thread in that I use a variety of balls. I find that the course, wind and clubs all play parts in shot outcomes, just as the balls do. I pair balls to a particular course rather than play the same ball all the time. I like the slow meter Callaway for Merion but will use the level 47 Nike for St. A. where the wind is considerable and I need length. Olympic calls for the Callaway level 33. You get the idea. The number on the ball that is most important to me is spin which I then make sure pairs well with my irons. High spin balls and low spin irons negate the positives just as a low spin ball will not be very responsive with a high spin iron. All this thought process is what keeps the game interesting and challenging.

Now to decide which ball. There's a risk/reward scenario with the balls. The more expensive ones give you great rewards when you hit them properly BUT miss the hit and you're going to get hurt more by the deviation.

IMO, the 33 Callaway won't break the bank, you get sufficient spin and distance plus you can get away with slight misses and still get good results.
