I didn't upgrade to the newer Callaway X-Hot because its less forgiving and doesn't look to have too much added distance.  My driver is 278 vs this 282.

The 86 Taylormade R1 doesn't look that forgiving, either.  Another 282.

The 85 Nike Covert looks decent, compared to mine.  Another 282.

Anyways, enough of my opinion... what should I do?  I'd like to be able to take advantage of the par 5s - I don't eagle enough to be competitive.

In general, what level should I start seeing a vast improvement due to superior equipment?

    Thanks,

    Hog

Given you are at L83, I think you go with the Convert, or wait until L89 for the SLDR shown. (now in black, BTW) And get a 3rd wedge, to drop the hybrid, the L75 Speedblades go 220 for the 3i anyway, only 5 yards less than the Hybrid. The L78 CG16, L39 ATV, or the L42 Ping are good choices for the missing link, they go 75-80 yards. All 3 drivers also have HIGH trajectory as well.

IIRC there's a special edition white SLDR out at L79 although a little more expensive. If my memory is correct I'd go for that.

Edit, Yep limited edition for a short period only: Go for it.

Although looking at your clubs I'd say you'd benefit more by ditching the hybrid and getting a CG 60 wedge to complete your set of wedges.

+1 CJ , also agree on ditching the hybrid . The problem is not from the tee , but on the green . The problem is distance to pin , which is 15 ft. .Add a 3rd wedge , and improve your short game . The closer to pin , better birdie opportunities . Better scoring , means better game . Also 4.5 is top of the line , when it comes to forgiveness . For now , that`s as good as it gets . Good luck with your game .

    Appreciate the input, all.

My 56-degree wedge goes 100yds, so I don't really see the benefit from an 80yd wedge... please feel free to enlighten me, though.  My 15-ft Avg From Hole is mostly because of my iron shots, as I don't miss by much with wedges.

Plus, the 225yd hybrid "could" help with my thread's goal of tearing up the par 5's.  It seems like its more accurate and consistent (higher level) than my 220yd 3-iron.

I have another question -- Does a 282yd driver make considerably more than a 4yd improvement over my 278yd driver?

    Thanks,

    Hog

You need to remember there's 5 shots with a wedge, Full, Punch, Pitch, Chip and Flop that's 5 more distances you can play full strength and so not have to 'judge' the distance. Also  what they do after landing will affect the club you use too.

Choking down on any club reduces it's reliability, i.e. whether the shot goes the distance you want it to, whether that's due to deviations or human ability I'm not sure but it's what most people experience.

In general punches roll more after landing and on some greens that's NOT what you want, pitches with the Clevelands with full back spin stop dead on anything less than the downhill slope of Mount Everest, that 3rd wedge gives you that many more options. On the other hand that hybrid you've got adds nothing to your repertoire that your irons or an improved 3W (hint BB) wouldn't do better.

Edit: The hybrid won't help on Par5's at all, and the extra choices around the greens with the extra wedge will save you many more shots. However looking at your equipment again, if you want a longer second shot I'd wait until you make L84 (next level for you) then get the R11 3W, you will be flabbergasted what 3Ws of that level and higher will do with backspin, i.e. they'll stop DEAD on the green. Your longer aim should be the BB 3W but in the mean time the R11 will make you wonder what use the hybrid ever was. (I use mine for assaulting my Caddy with and I don't need it in the bag for that).

I have the 3 Cle Wedges, like alot of other players.....   100yrd, 80yrd and 60yrd and I use em all.

Don't forget about spin.... Depending on wind, Top spin and the 100yrd wedge can go 106 yrds....  80 yrd wedge can go 86yrds etc ....

I'm not huge fane of Pitch shots (actually havn't used it to know...lol)  I'm more of a Flop and Chip person....  and all those 3 wedge distances are perfect.

Personel taste, but I recommend the 3 wedges and drop the hybrid.

After some very useful advice from YankeeJim and Jimbog I've come to love the pitch shot, especially with the CG64 a wonderful shot that even I usually get to within 3feet of the hole and actually in the hole quite a few times.

No Doubt mate...   I'm not saying don't use the Pitch,  a very good shot to play.

I'll start using it some time...  at the moment I'm trying to work out other little things with me game, then I might move on to the Pitch. eg I was a Flop Man (some say a bit of a flop...lol)  flop, flop.... most of the time.  Have that shot just about nailed... now i'm working on the chip at close range....  then I will move onto something else.
