I'd just like to open up the question about proshop balls w/ distance ratings.

    1) The main query is a ball w/ a rating of, say, '2' will go farther than a starter ball (0) but is that on drives and punches, pitches, chips etc?

    2) Is that extra distance on putts, too? (I've heard 'not on putts')

    ---

    3) If that is a quick answer, an addition question is, generally, how much farther can one expect from a ball w/ a '1' or '2'? (compared to the 0 starter)

I know that will vary a lot but does anyone have any examples or 'rules of thumb'?

(natch, this will take practice but the main question is the 1st two above)

    Sorry I don't have a definitive answer :-(

I think there may be comparisons between each manufacturers ball, like for like, but alas I have no true answer, I personally think its learn one ball and stick with it, learn it inside out.

If a ball's added distance factor doesn't apply on putts (or chips, etc) I think that should be well explained in the description of the product. But, you know...

    1. Yes, all other variables being equal for those types of shot.

    2. No.

    3. Assuming constant variables like elevation, club loft/trajectory, wind, etc there will not be a lot more distance with each step 0 to 1, to 2, to 3 etc. Going from a 0 to a 3 will add significant distance, Again - the variables will determine how much, so no one can give you a specific number.

I agree.  I regularly see posts from people suggesting others play practice rounds with free balls but I really advise against this.  Obviously it's more expensive to use your normal ball for knock around rounds with friends but if you use the free ball then you are learning zero about how to play any particular shot.

Find a ball you like and use it for pretty much every shot you take here is my motto.  With the exception of a novelty ball for alt shot games now and then or one of the sponsors balls for playing a Virtual Tour round with started gear.

    This!

I'm not writing down every shot and playing from my memory is "hit or miss" too  often, but after a while I'm rather private with my golf balls (nutz!) and the estimates may come close in rising frequency. With some probability I'm gonna improve!

I would go with the level 29 Taylormade R11.  The high trajectory plus way cheaper than level 32 Callaway X2 Hot.  You give up a few yards but worth it till level 48 Taylormade R1 9.0
