A driving range isn't needed because we can use practice rounds to practice - sand shots, chips, pitches, flops, and hitting from rough, fringe, etc.
I rarely play practice rounds. Instead I play ranked rounds.
For real golf I used the driving range to work on swing mechanics more than for defining the distance each club could hit the ball. Here on WGT there are so many variables during play that add or subtract shot distance that I'm a firm believer that playing is more valuable than practice.
