Inconsistancies in play

  I enjoy playing wgt golf, and don't mind spending some money to play, however, I find the inconsistancies in the way the game plays makes me less inclined to spend a lot of money playshoing.  By this I mean the distances a ball carries, the fact that greens seem to have no consistency when it comes to speed, and meters that suddenly go berserk when you get near the dinger.  Someone should be aware that when a club is listed as being able to hit a ball 160 yards, that means it should hit 160 yards in the air using a standard wgt ball.  Of course I realize that wind and elevations have an effect, but in this game it seems you figure that it only goes about 145 in the air and rolls the rest of the way, at least sometimes. Other times it acts as it should and carries the distance.  It is very discouraging that you look at wind conditions elevation and other factors and your shot acts inappropriately.  An example, I was playing the final hole of a club tournament, on one of the British courses, not sure which one, 12 mile per hour wind from behind, drive went over 300 yards leaving 41 yard shot to green.  Because pin was on portion of green that was 4 ft elevation, used a little more than half of full swing with wedge designed to go 75 yards with full swing.  Ball traveled 30 yards in the air leaving me just short of the green with pitch shot to get to the hole.  Also chip and pitch shots are very inconsistent.  Pitch shots on a real golf course normally travel most of the way to the hole, and either stop because of coming in on high trajectory of back up because of lower trajectory and backspin. Generally speaking any shot hit with a pitching wedge or less is a pitch shot,  Also flop shots are high shots which land softly, which by the way can be hit from 60 yards out if necessary. I know because I used to hit flop shots 60 yards or when I needed to elevate over a tree or other obstacle. I will continue to play, because I enjoy playing however I will spend minimal money because the inconsistancies are to discouraging. I think part of the problem is you try to figure to many different balls, clubs, etc. to get a consistency in the game play.

  hello chuck, great post my friend! a couple things to consider are club distance ratings are actually an estimation; it is left to us to map them in order to be more sure as to how each club will react in different situations and spin settings. as to inconsistent green speeds I believe that WGT makes slight changes in order to keep us on or toes. the swing meter is a fickle beast which requires a bit of maintenance, have you tried Ccleaner?

  as for the rest of your concerns we should have a game or two and i'm sure we can clear up most points, if you have Skype, a bunch of us at the Great Lakes Gamblers Country Club use the voice chat to exchange ideas and game tips. if you do not have Skype it's quite easily installed and by the way FREE!

  The more I play this game the more convinced I am that the people who put it out know nothing at all about golf.  This game is supposed to be free, which is nice but you have to buy better clubs and balls in order to get better scores.  Still not a problem, because some of the credits can be earned by watching commercials and taking surveys and such.  My problem with the game is this.  You say the club distances are estimations.  In real golf if you were the level golfer you achieve in WGT, club distances are not estimations. They shouldn't be in WGT either.  For instance, I am using the, Ping G20 set.  Starts with driver that hits, 270, 3wood 235, etc., Irons start with 3 or 4 iron that hits 210, down to pitching wedge that hits 115.  Fist of all these clubs should consistently hit a starter ball within 5 yards give or take of the rated distance, under normal conditions. And this should be on the fly not counting roll.  They do not do this consistently.  Secondly the irons are not graduated equally from one to the next.  A real set of irons has an equal graduation between each club. On the G2j0 set I use the 9 iron is rated at 135 yards, the pitching wedge at 115.  If I am a golfer capable of hitting my driver 270 yds and my 4 iron 200 yds. then my 9 iron should go 150 yds and the pw 140.yds.  I know this is true because when I was younger I could hit those distances.  Also watch the pro's, today they are hitting 9 irons 170 yds.  Also they choose clubs on how far the ball flies in the air, and then they estimate how much it will run on the ground, according to the conditions of the course, dry and hard, wet and soft. uphill or downhill, etc.  Whoever set this game up apparently doesn't know how to hit a ball properly, and hits more like line drives that depend on roll to get where they want to go.  Even chip shots, pitch shots and flop shots are line drives.  A ball struck properly out of a green side bunker does not run 15 yards uphill. A putt with a sharp right to left break that breaks before or after the hole and ends up left of the hole does not leave you with a sharp break coming back, it should be uphill, which many times it's not.  The thing I see is that there are too many glaring inconsistancies and they don't seem to care about improving it.  And by the way, they are being paid pretty well for this game, at least if they are smart business people.  Calloway, Nike, Taylor Made, Syyrixon, Rocket Balz, and everything else they advertise pays them, not to mention the surveys.   I could go on and on but will just say that from now on I will spend very little out of my pocket for any equipment, until they straighten out some of the flaws they have in the program.

  I have only just started playing with the standard clubs and balls and posted similar thoughts. I think the mistake we are making is thinking it is like real golf. I have been way off the ding with some approach shots and they have landed  alongside the flag. Others I have dinged no wind ,exact distances and they have gone berserk. It is a shame because they have gone to so much trouble to make it look good, which I think it does but basically there is very little skill involved when these abberations occur every round.

  Chuck, on that 41 yard shot you described, you're assuming that the power for clubs is linear, it's not. That's why the suggestion to map out your clubs is so essential to getting accurate yardages. For example, my 75 yard wedge at 80% power goes only 74% of the clubs distance. At the 50% you played your shot, the difference would be much greater. My 60 yard wedge goes only 43% of the yardage at 70% power, that's the lowest power percentage I have mapped, but it illustrates my point. Hope it helps.

  You say I have no understanding of the game.   Which game are you referring to, WGT's idea of golf, or actual golf?  If you are referring to WGT's idea, you may be right.  I don't understand how the name brand manufacturers can allow WGT to misrepresent their clubs so badly. If you are referring to actual golf, let me tell you. I have been playing since I was 15 years old and am currently 75 years old.  The past 20 years I have been playing roughly 5 times a week during the golf season and a few times in the off season.  I have owned 4 new sets of clubs during that period and not one of those sets performed as poorly as the sets WGT uses.  Hitting the ding you say.  Anything within the first set of marks one side or the other of the ding should give reasonable results, but even hits dead on do not always give good results.  And as far as charting your clubs.  Why do you have stroke pal and putter pal if they do not accurately show the distance?  I have currently rented the Ping G25 set because of the free rental period.  Like all of the other sets they misrepresent the actual club sets.  Any set of irons I have ever bought have had equal variations between the clubs.  They do not vary 10 yards between some  and 15 yards between others. And 9 irons that only hit the ball 130 yards or 135 yards, when you have a golfer capable of hitting 280 yard drives. You have to be joking.  At my age I can still get my 9 iron close to that.  And by the way that is carry distance not total distance.  All in all this game could be much better if they would make it more true to real golf and actually try to improve it.  I could list a lot more but why bother, they don't really care,

  1st ..i wanna say.... much respect .. for play'n @ 75 ..

  now... next i went an chek'd out yer page ...stats ,, friends.. what ya play'd...

  now.. if ya want reply from folks bashing ..WGT ..then just ignor mine...

  what i seen ... an from what i've ;earned here...90%  of the folks that only play by themselves ..end up post'n stuff like you just did... bitter rants..an blaming WGT...

  when .. to me you have miss'd the best part of WGT .."""".making friends""

  2nd ..being good at golf in real life helps a tad...but for computer golf... ya just gotta adjust... actually same as real golf... things are different... it don't mean diddly what you can hit yer PW ..in real life...

  ok.3rd..,,. look'd at yer stat's... an seen just what i was sayin... looks like ya just been hardheaded..an whackin it the same ole way ..over an over everyday...

  do you know there is a special way ..90% of ppl on here flop ... how bout this ..if i ask'd you.. how far would a putt go on level ground,, at 50% power,, on ..master greens ..would you know ?? 

  how bout elevation... can you tell me how much you add or subtract for up or down hill ?? .. it sounds like ...the reason you are blaming the clubs for the performance... is you just ..see the dist to pin...grab a club .an whack and hope...an expect it to be what the club was rated...

  now... see if ya ,,was playin with a friend... or ..had been comming here an reading all the very use full info that can be found.. askin some question's....

  i garrrantee ya..you would have a ..better scramblin avg.. 4 sure...

  there are alot of other older dude's on here ...and younger ones also...that will be glad to ..play few rounds with ya... blab..an teach a few tips an tricks..that WGT has taught them or they learned ....
