Same hole. on up-slope of fairway bunker. 183 to back pin. wind 15 mph into from the left.  aimed slightly left.  missed the ding line, was a little late.  expected ball to go right.

it went left 45 yds left into the weeds.

    sort it

You hit the top of the bunker wall. What club were you using?

    Exactly Jim.

You need a club with more loft to get out of there. And mishits in bunkers are likely to go anywhere they please - maybe on the fairway - maybe back at your feet.

Next time just hit a 8/9 iron out into the fairway (if the lie is bad, go with a wedge) You'll have a short wedge from there to the hole. Attack the pin, the green is flat and will stop near the hole if using a wedge.

erm, no.  I did not hit the top of the bunker wall.  Had I done so it would not have flown 185 yds.

If you miss the ding on a long iron with that sort of slope you're facing, seriously doubt that you would clear the lip. One thing you have to remember is the player is seriously penalized for missing shots out of a sand lie. Just think you're not remembering some of the key details correctly.

Yes, that long iron comes out low enough so maybe you actually did clip the top edge of the wall just enough to send it left. Your result could be a result of that.

apologies men.  was on the fairway on the upslope before the bunker, using a 3 iron.

Well the only explanation then would be as the trap one, especially with a 3i-it probably clipped the top of the trap. Just a WAG.  :-)
