    YankeeJim:
A can of compressed air is a quick fix if you're not into taking the cover off to clean it.

Or give it a gentle hoover ( vacum cleaner), you can be amazed with the amount of dust the PC fan can attract..  Don't be afraid guy's to open a few screws and get the side panel off, and go for a decent clean.  Its also nice to see the guts of your computer and be in awe of the power.lol

    YankeeJim:

    Technical answer...

The effect of heat on the atomic structure of a material is to make the atoms vibrate, and the higher the temperature the more violently the atoms vibrate.

In a conductor, which already has a large number of free electrons flowing through it, the vibration of the atoms causes many collisions between the free electrons and the captive electrons. Each collision uses up some energy from the free electron and is the basic cause of resistance. The more the atoms jostle around in the material the more collisions are caused and hence the greater the resistance to current flow.

I could look 4 miles down the valley at the Nuclear power station and understand your answer better than if it was my my poor little i7 processor.

But best if i connect my PC to the Hadron Colidor will i get a smooth meter then?

LOL. By that definition above I think you'd have a meltdown.

Be careful with vacuum cleaners, they generate static electricity and that zaps circuits. Ground yourself to avoid this.

A lot of people just sit the laptop on a table cloth, a bed, chair, etc...not good for cooling!

If you use compressed air to clean out the fan/heatsink make sure you use a paper clip or something to stick in the fan to keep it from spinning which could mess it up...

Look on the bottom of your laptop and you will see a Windows sticker usually a pastel color with a silverish bar that runs the length of it...if you see a burn spot on that sticker it means your laptop might be running hot, or got too hot at least once in the past...

Thats one of the reasons i bought a brand new tower PC rather than a laptop.  When i decided to use laptop a few years ago in my studio it didn't last long due to overheating.  Nothing beats a tower PC if you need to have it on for long spells and not planning on moving about.  The kids have a laptop (well confiscated it from misus) and i use it at times and you can feel it getting hot quite quickly and thats a sony viao and only a couple of years old.  Personally i much prefer a tower PC, every one has their own preferance, what ever makes you hit ding easier.....But I've had my PC on for 6 hours playing WGT and i just put my hand on the side panel and its not at all hot.  you can feel a breeze from the fan if anything.  AMAZING!

I have both too...I like the towers because they are easy to work on and have dedicated memory, most laptops have shared memory which sucks for gaming...

Can't say this will solves everyone's meter probs, but it has for a couple of guys in my CC, so I thought it was worth sharing.

Both were having the "normal" jittery meter, but it seemed to have got worse recently, to the point of becoming unplayable. After a lot of guesswork, one of them mentioned that he had checked his Bios (?) and the CPU was running a bit hot. He planned to try a new fans and various other options.

I (half jokingly) said "stick a fan in front of it". Well he did. He took the side panel off the PC, and aimed a desk fan at it. MIRACLE! Meter was smooth as silk. Fan off - jittery again. Fan on - smooth again within 60 seconds.

Inspired by this, another member tried the same, and got the same result.

Now I'm no techy, and I'm not saying this is the answer for every ill that WGT can throw at us, but I do know that PCs like to be kept cool, so if yours is giving you grief, this might be a simple cure for some problems.

    Steve.

this is very true i found this outon my own nbeen seting fans up fo my laptop but recently got a good cooling pad but wen it hot it jittery lap top cool meter smooth 150% true

No no no no no no Mr Bones!  Vacuum cleaners produce copious quantities of static electricity, you may be lucky for a while but one day you'll fry something.  Jim's suggestion of a can of compressed air is the way to go.

    chrisironsbones:

I poured water over my Pc i got a jerky meter.  I decided to pour beer over my PC i got a perfectly smooth meter for a few holes, so i decided to pour whisky over pc, I had the most erratic meter ever. I also need a new PC as i have fried Its brains.

Ah, there's your problem.  Since you've got an i7 processor you'll have to use Guinness.

Clearly we are dealing with a horrendous drinking problem and such a savage case of alcohol abuse it`s tantamount to sacrilege!!

May his All mighty Sloshedness Bacchus burp a blessing in your general direction.
