    Long-time listener, first-time caller.

So I have a confession to make: I am one of those idiots who doesn't buy balls.

I've been playing WGT for a significant amount of time (don't remember exactly when, but my first replay is from 2010), and I would say I split my plays about 50-50 between unranked fun plays with friends and family and stroke play tournaments. (This is why I'm still in the Master tier after all these years despite being level 83—my stroke average is finally starting to improve toward 63 after being 65.x for a very long time, but at this point I find that I end up doing better in UEL and Best-Of tourneys, which aren't going to yield favorable scores in terms of moving up. I'm sure my stats also therefore look pretty unimpressive to some of the better players out there for this reason.)

Now I've reached a pretty solid place I feel like for sticking with starter balls all this time, and I could tell you how my clubs are going to react to almost any green complex on the free stroke-play courses with the balls I use. (Whistler, still looking at you. Ugh.) I do well enough in the Master tier tourneys, usually placing in the top 100 (although there are usually only a few courses and formats where I manage to grab top-10 credit prizes). It's enough of an income for me to be able to look forward to getting new clubs hopefully in a few months, but should I finally break the 63.00 barrier, I doubt that I'll manage to advance much further.

At least for the next three years, I am going to be poor enough that buying credits regularly is going to be out of the question. Therefore, my questions are as follows: 1) If I start down this path of buying balls, am I going to be able to sustain it without dishing out significant amounts of money? (Maybe there's a cheaper ball that I could go with?) 2) How much adjustment time am I going to need to get used to things like increases in distance and spin? If it's something that's going to take closer to 100 rather than 10 rounds to figure out how to account for, I'm not sure it's worth it for the family-and-friends rounds that I play (which are friendly, sure, but I'm still a competitive f@@@er) even if I can manage not tanking my credit stock—I'd probably feel happier continuing to upgrade clubs rather than anything else at that point and just topping out in the Tour Master tier.

Sorry for the long rambly post (people tell me I have a problem with this), and thanks for any input!

I play daily. I also mine Earn Free Credits daily - mostly Watch Videos.

I play 550 credits per sleeve Nike Level 81+ balls which have 120 hits (putts don't count) of 'life' per ball (360 hits per sleeve).

My stroke average is 62.5 and i usually make 25 or so putts per 18 holes. Doing the math we see that I can play about 54 holes (3, 18 hole rounds) per ball.

At 183.33 credits per ball, if I play 3, 9 hole rounds a day (27 holes) I use up a ball every 2 days and am paying 91.67 credits per day (1/2 a ball) to play WGT.

    That's a bit less than $1 a day.

If you decided you wanted to, it should be pretty easy to redirect less than $1 per day of your budget to cover balls to use playing WGT.

To be quite honest, if I could manage the starter balls like you, I would first replace my short wedges ... these will last you longer than the credits you'd spend on balls ....

I agree with Apex in doing the math, and with Mushy regarding the wedges.

Let me add that any custom ball will better your play, and my calculation for the cheaper ones is 1/10 of a sleeve per 9 hole round (a bit costlier than Apex). While a B-ES (1 cr/round) is a real budget deal, the Tour-SD (6 crs/round) has probably the best price/performance ration around. Your history shows very variable amounts of play, so we cannot tell your monthly spendings.

Getting two short wedges (?ATV lvl 39?) will make a big difference in your short game => Approaches that stay close to the flag, bunker shots of some reliability, chips and pitches with better control...

Both investments and the resulting progress have consequences: You will become a TM and you may eventually become a Legend, playing from the tips. This prestigious step may be regarded as negative in some respect - it calls for spendings in better clubs (and balls).

The benefit may be better shooting and thus more fun with the game - imagine to place a flop next to the hole!

    Decision time!

It's July, so it must be Christmas somewhere already.

Like Mushy said, wedges are the key, so you now have 2 new ones (garant you, they are pretty basic, but they'll be superb compared to the starters you carry). Along with those you should also find 5 sleeves of WGT tour - SD balls, which have very good distance and spin properties for their prize. I thought I'd start you off on those, cause they won't cost you an arm and a leg, if you start getting hooked on the good stuff. You can buy 11 sleeves of them for the price of 1 sleeve of what I'm using (might be rehab time for me, lol).

So enjoy and I'm sure you'll get to TM soon enough.

    Cheers,

    Matt

P.S.: Was thinking of choosing blue for the ball colour, but chose white instead. I shudder at the thought of giving anyone blue balls ;-)

Thanks all for the thoughts! I'm trying to stay away from offers because of my work situation right now, but I might end up going that route.

Most of all, mkrizan, thanks for the wedges. I'm only just now taking these out for a spin, but they are definitely an upgrade. I'm going to wait until I get a few rounds under my belt with them to dive into the balls, but 6 cr/round sounds at least somewhat doable.

Good on you Matt!  People like you are what makes this site better than almost any on the internet.

I had used the WGT G-13S ball at 99 credits per sleeve all the way until I reached the Legend tier.  You would enjoy them and not break the bank.. Actually if you do a few videos and 1 or 2 surveys a week you'll never need to buy balls.  I watched 3 videos today and earned 34 credits. If you do that 3 times you'll pay for maybe a weeks worth of balls . Every day and you will build up a little reserve.  Good luck
