Although the graphics and the actual concept are amazing as a free game it is a bit like Linux as a free OS in that it almost works but it does not for ordinary people.

I know I will be told that the totally unpredictable working of the swing meter is because I have an old computer, which I do not believe , it does not account for totally different results from the same actions. I have seen people say that this is just like real golf but they obviously do not play real golf if they say that. The pros know when they hit the ball like that that this will happen and they know when they have made a mistake. In the free version of the game I believe you are in the hands of mother luck as you get a totally different result for the same action. I have also seen it said that with top of the range computer it works fine. Great again for those with loads o money but not exactly as advertised.

It seems that the only way to get a decent game is to spend money which again would confirm that by spending money you will get a less eratic response.

It is a pity but one of the misadvantages of having little money.

Many players are able to play this game without putting any money in or hardly any.

I suspect that it will be hard to earn substantial credits from Thailand like the OP...

HandyMcNab: Of course a lot of credits are necessary to play competetively, but the erratic meter should not come from the free equipment. In the contrary, to my knowledge it has less stutters and such than the custom equipment, albeit a fast meter.

And, if you upgrade, you will rise in the tiers, get more difficult conditions which will result in more upgrades!

With an old computer, it will be necessary to stop all unnecessary programs, maybe close all other browser windows. It may be good to keep an eye on CPU load (task manager) and seek moments of low load. For instance, have some patience (10 secs or more) before you shoot.

    Have fun!

    HandyMcNab:

Those pros might not be quite so sure where the ball was going if they were playing with Wall Mart clubs and Pinnacle balls though.

The starter clubs have very poor precision and forgiveness, these together mean even a perfectly struck shot may end up several yards from where you aimed it.  Add the lack of spin from both clubs and balls and you're looking at having a hard time getting your approaches close to the hole.  Pro golfers can hit the ball right at the hole and stop it dead as long as they aren't playing a long iron.   That simply isn't going to happen with starter gear here.

It's tough to get by with free credits given how few are available for those outside the USA.  The UK isn't too bad but once you get beyond there it really drops off.   I'd advise joining a good country club, you'll often find long term members who are happy to help out those coming up through the ranks.  Don't go asking for gear, that never works.  Be active both in tourneys and the forums and you never know.   Some clubs do a 12 days of Christmas event, we have for the last 3 years and it's usually those at lower tiers who benefit most.  I know I'd rather gift an amateur a set of clubs than a legend a couple of sleeves of balls.

You are missing my point .  I can play with free clubs and balls but it is not enjoyable when you get a different result from the same action.

I play the real game with a set of Henry Cotton irons made many moons ago and have great fun. If I hit a bad shot I do not blame the club I blame myself. I also use a set of woods made in Leven,Fife. They are woods and they have plastic insets on the striking surface and the head is half the size of modern clubs. If I hit a bad shot I know it is my fault same as I know if I hit a good shot there is still nothing wrong with the old clubs. This is not the case with this game which as I said gives random results for identical shots. Sometimes you can be way off hitting the line and the ball lands in the cup. Another time you can hit the same shot and it will fly through the green. If people are getting these great scores I guess it is because as you spend more money the randomness of the results is reduced. The game therefore is more like proper golf for those with money.

I'm just bleating, but I believe what I am saying to be true.

I don't think you believe what you're saying to be true. You've not played a single ranked round of Golf. You've just played CTTH games. Play some of the courses before you're so sure of what you don't believe.

    This is what he explained:

Add the effects of the randomizing "VEM" feature in the program, and the variance is explained.

The free part of the game is like an underpowered car - it works but it's only little fun. Once you buy better clubs and balls, the fun factor rises as well as competitiveness.

Free credits, for all of it.

As I write this I'm also clicking on my other computer on WGT's live gamer extra views,   Maybe I can hook up the drinking bird to do it, it's that simple. Glance & click. Two seconds. whew. But I wouldn't do it without a second computer.

Testing out the new irons today. NIKE 97s...not bad, but I'm still learning how to hit w/ proshop balls, too. Free. Almost got Eagle on #9, from the FW bounced about 2 feet from the pin. I still have trouble driving to that green for some reason, too short or it rolls past.

[So, I'm showing that the OP presumption that 'It seems that the only way to get a decent game is to spend money' is not accurate from my experience, but it may be to others]
