Not my month for computers. Hoping for some help. While trying to format an external hard drive, I inadvertently formatted by back up (D:)...consequently, everything on my desktop is gone, along with music, internet favourites, pics, etc. I know there are several retrieval programs..and a couple of the free ones took about 2 hours and seem to have located the files....but, then I had no way to get them back to my desktop. A system restore failed regadless of what point I selected. Anyone have any suggestions or reliable purchasable programs. I understand this might be something that they call a "partition" issue?

Any help will be greatly appreciated...the pics and music are obviously important to me and I hope to be able to retrieve them.

    thanks..Duc

First of all, sorry for your loss which strengthens the case to back up.

Secondly, if the files have been retrieved, its just a case of right clicking and send to desktop (creating a shortcut to your desktop) ;-)

    Hope this helps m8

thanks Mush....it seems the problem is that the retrieval program found over 5 million files....I wouldn't have a clue what to move to the desktop and what to keep and what not to...it has things like   bootex.log and hyberfil.sys and file folders and system files and text documents and text files and application extensions and DAT files and BAK files...and other such things that are in some language I am far too thick to understand...

My goal is hopefully to just get all the folders I had on my desktop back and have access to pictures, music, etc....but, I don't see those folder names.

quick snap of what the retrieval looks like as it was running about half way through...suggestions anyone?

Top left of that image shows my back up recovery disc D ..... so they were all files on your D drive, if its now formatted , just recover all by checking the boxes in the right hand pane, once completed , hopefully your D drive will be restored and with folders you recognise.

But make sure you recover to Disc D . If disc C is ever mentioned I personally would abort ;-)

Hey I must know something after all.

I've been using Recuva for a couple of years, it works a treat and is free.  It also lets you search for just images, videos and so on and then lets you choose which files you want to restore.

    Good luck.

I don't think we can be two of the sharpest knives in the drawer Mainz if we need a program to recover files that we want, but deleted. hehe.  : )

I beg to differ, intelligence is the ability to use your experience and knowledge to solve a problem.

When I have a problem, I'm intelligent enough to ask for your help Scott, lol.
