Going into the back nine and being seven under par, choked with three double bogies.  Is it just me  or is the game designed for these magnificent failures?

Did pretty much the same thing the other night. Went -7 on front 9 at Kiawah and feeling on top of the world because I pretty much own the back 9 on that course so I was shooting for my lowest round ever. Then, I missed a short birdie putt on 10 and that started the slide. I then proceede the bogie the next 3 holes but regrouped to go E on the back.

Anyway to answer your question, in my case I felt 'jobbed' on my first bogie because the lie was true, but it stopped short of the cup even though I had more than enough distance calculated.  The next 2 were totally my fault because I was still pissed about the 1st one an let my concentration lapse.

The rumor mill has it, that the game increases it's random acts of game violence, VEM, to anyone who is surpassing their general capabilities.

Actually, it's probably just nerves. Anyway a fix for both is possible. Save game at the turn, clear cache, go relax for a while. Hopefully the cache clear takes care of the planned bogey-monster, and the break calms the old nerves.

    Hit 'em straight. :^)

Sounds plausible and I like your idea.  The only thing I'm leery about is if I take a break before starting the back 9, I may lose any momentum I've built up to that point.  But, it's a pick your poison choice, I guess, and you're suggestion seems to be the best one.

I took my own advice today. CC has been messing around with the close tees. Had a neat little 28 on the front. Saved, went downstairs and chilled for a while, petted the dog.

Back nine, I found a tree, I'd forgotten about, which cost me bogey on a hole I usually bird, but still turned in a 30 for a nifty 58. So the bogey monster was my own derned fault.

For what it is worth, from my view point,  the back 9 of Kiawah is the crappiest 9 in the game.  The cameras are way out of whack, and this is why I dont play Kiawah.  BUT,  I have done the same thing on St. A's which is the easiest course in the game.  So I would say it is a combination of the two

"Choking" is a living thing. I remember years back Nivlac (wgtniv - Calvin) speaking of it, and how he would pause for minutes/or longer on the 20' + putts and important shots; and relax and slow breathe until he could focus without anxiety...one's first 29 or 59 is testimony to it's life.

You can also choke from round to round.. Played a CC 2 rounds @ Pinehurst (same conditions).. First round, my first 59.. I was overjoyed.  Next round, a 68.. lol..  I totally believe the VEM monster got me, 59 was way out of my norm so I figure it reeled me back in on the 2nd round.. or maybe I just choked.   :)

In a related matter, what I've been learning  (THE HARD WAY) is to keep my composure.

Because when I three putt or miss a scramble, etc. I get flustered. Then on the next hole  i drive a new ball into an obvious water trap in the FW because I just want to bash the next shot.

I can ruin my game for myself because I don't know how to remain calm and keep my wits.

If I keep trying and don't quit, there is a good chance things will turn around for the better.
