Calculating horizontal yardage

  I feel like I simply haven't discovered that there is something that does this already but, how does everyone calculate horizontal (cross) yardage particularly on approach shots? The pointer tells us how far away the hole is but nothing tells us horizontal yardage.

  Lets say I calculate that I need to move my pointer (or whatever it's called) 12 yards to the right of the pin, how do I determine what is exactly 12 yards? We can move the pointer forward/away from the hole 12 yards to get a visual idea of what 12 yards looks like, but that looks like a totally different amount than if you pull the pointer back towards you 12 yards from the pin. So I am wondering is there there something in the game that can be used to tell the side to side yardage or what does everyone else do?

  Change the shot mode to Chip, Pitch or Flop.

  A grid then appears on the green when you click and hold on the aim point.

  Each square of that grid is 2 feet by 2 feet and the grid is anchored to the aim point so the grid is movable.

  Also, the box that appears above the aiming arrow is around 10ft wide, IIRC (unless it is clearly not in some close up angles). That is useful for lateral aiming on fairways etc as well as greens (from a distance)

  and in zoom ( via the camera zoom, not right click  that is) its approx 5 ft ;-)

  Great thread you linked to btw. Have you any other factors for other wind angles besides .7 for a 45 degree?

  I recall I just used sine and cosine for working out, I don't have the details with me, but you could try using compass points or the face of a clock, whichever you prefer.

  DaddysKat's wind calculator does a fairly good job of figuring cross wind distances once you have got it set up fairly closely. Then just use the pitch/chip grip to move the aim point to where you think it needs to be. Remember on  holes that have severe slopes to change your aim position  to follow the contour of the green.
