The truth is there are so many options and variables in playing out of the sand that only practice and experience can answer your question with any assurance. I can however advise the following:
If using a flop out of the sand, aim well left and use full backspin, if using a pitch or a punch, both good options also, add less backspin. You should still add some of course, or the ball will tend to want to roll on you.
Also very important to remember is that, hard sand plays much like a fairway in distance and control, while soft sand and especially a plugged lie will make for a much more difficult shot.
Practice, practice and then more practice is the best bet for learning and mastering any kind of shot!!!
