I recently tiered up to Tour Master,so am now playing on Tournament 11 greens. I have been around long enough to have some experience with this green speed, just not every day like now. Am having all sorts of problems getting the speed right. I have read a lot of posts concerning the speed of Tournament greens. Most of what i read says multiply by 70%, adjust for elevation, and add a little extra (how much to add seems to vary with the poster). Being someone who likes to get a little aggressive with the speed of my putts, i can't seem to make most of what i am reading work for me. I have been practicing trying to figure out speed adjustments from various distances and elevations, just can't seem to nail anything down to my satisfaction. Either i'm too fast or just short. I understand that there is no real miracle solution, however if someone could point me in the right direction, i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Besides the obvious - hit softer because it rolls better - some extra attention is necessary to slope adjustment (up and down).

Because the 70% mean less power for a certain length, the extra for upslope must be bigger, perhaps by 5 - 10 %. On downslopes, by logic you must take off more than before, too, perhaps even a tad more than on upslope. This difference becomes more important on the faster Legend and Tour Legend greens (stimp 12 and 13). Think of paranoia mode after having putted off the green or the first time ;)

Rule of thumb, subtract quarter, i.e level 20 yards hit 15 BUT remember every inch up then add 1yd and opposite if downhill. Also this will not work if very steep downhill, especially past hole, the beauty will just weeeeeeeeeeeeeee off green lol

10 ft putt 2 ft up

    10+ 2up+ 2 = 14 X .75= perfect speed for T 11's

    10 ft 2 down

    10 - 2 + 2 = 10 x .73 = perfect

    10 ft 6 down

    10 - 6 + 2 = 6 X .70 - a few more ft, + a prayer + a lot of practice + double the break = might be the right speed....

This works for me....tournament greens........I use .77 as a  multiplier,,example: if the green is perfectly flat and you have a ten foot putt, multiply that 10ft putt by .77 which equals 7.7 ft of power,I  usually  round up to 8ft depending on circumstance,,now adjusting for slope,,uphill I ad 1ft of power for every inch of elevation, example: the sign reads 10ft with 5 inch elevation for a total of 15ft,multiply that by .77 equals 11.55 foot of power  again  I round up to 12 depending on circumstance,,,it is important to note when you have a declining  elevation  on a putt subtract 1 foot per inch example: a 20ft putt with a 5 inch down elevation would be equal to a 15 foot putt,,,down hill puts that are severe say anything over 10 foot I subtract another 20% from whatever the final distance dictates according to my formula example: a 20 foot put with 5 inch decline I would figure as follows,,20ft minus the 5 for the downhill equals 15 multiply that 15 by .77 equals 11.55 rounded to 12 then multiply that 12 by 20% or .20 which takes another 2.4 foot off that putt and would make the final power I use between 9.5 and 10ft.....I keep a calculator easily  accessible  on my tool bar ,,,,I know this sounds a bit daunting at first but once you start  using  it  religiously   it  becomes  very easy to figure distances on flat or up and down hill putts.

I actually prefer to use similar power as slower greens. Why you may ask? You can take the break out of the putts by hitting it firmer. Yes, you may have more 4 and 5 foot come backers. However, you will make far more first putts by being aggressive (I would be careful on downhill putts though)

Of course, tourney 11 greens are slow compared to what I often play on, which is why I am very aggressive on them

    Hi All

Its quite amazing how we all in our own way have a different way of calculating speed on different green speeds. One way or another we all seem to have something that works for us.

In the early days I used the following table, most of which is in my head now if I have not had too much to drink, in which case I start using a calculator again. Another thing is variations in putter used and also ball.

The table is based on my NIKE method putter and callaway (level 34 slow meter)

As a general rule of thumb I use the following (examples below)

12 foot putt, no uphill or down hill = 12 x 0.725 = 8.7 feet so would hit 9 feet of power

    12 foot putt, 2 up = 12+2 = 14 x 0.725 = 10.15 feet so would hit 11 feet of power

    12 foot putt, 2 down = 12 - 2 = 10 x 0.725 = 7.25 feet so would hit 7.25 feet of power

On more increased ups and downs I tend to rely on the following for example:

    16 foot putt, 8 up = 16 + 8 = 24 x 0.725 = 17.4 feet but I add 1/4 of the distance up so would actually hit 19.4 feet of power

    16 foot putt, 8 down = 16 - 8 = 8 x 0.725 = 5.8feet but I take of 1/4 of the distance down so would actually hit around 4 feet of power only.

This is only a guide to my basics, of course on some greens there is up and downhill during the putt which really takes experience and a good memory. I used to just go into practice games, trial and error on greens and use up some cheapo balls by constantly taking mulligans.

Good luck on the newer green speed

    Oshi
