percentage vrs Feet/Yardage

  I use percentage, but I get a bunch of people tell me that the percentage number is not the actual distance, but I can't find anyone that can tell me what the difference is.

  For this example forget the wind, ball, tee, fairway, elevation etc.

  My 6 iron 175yds I have mapped at 169 full back spin. The hole is 165 yard,  (165/169 = 97.63 % ) Granted depending if I hit the infamous ding or not I'll normally come within plus/minus 4 yards.

  Is trying to "guess" actual distance any closer.? How much is the percentage number off from the actual?

  That's pretty much what I do, and it works for me.

  I have to laugh at what some people tell you, Jiggsie. Excuse me for a moment.

  Okay.

  There is nothing wrong with the way you are calculating it. By your calculations you are within 0.0032 %. (which is close enough for government work)

  And, tell those people that are confusing you, if they are in need of computational mathematics tutoring...I am available for a sizable fee.

  indeed whats in a name or label??...through trial and error if your getting under 10 ft to the pin most times ,your system/formula is very adequate  me thinks,   gl  2u

  Results do the dictation...no matter how. I have always relied on a piece of taped on, lined notebook paper. Regardless of distance, club, shot type, it is simply "go to that line, stop at this line, aim for that wind, add a little for this wind, and so on...." But I'm lazy, I don't want to be bothered with arithmetic.  ~ SP ~

  Well said SP. Aim about there and hit around that hard. No mapping, no calculator and no spread sheets. No pitching or chipping either. This game is more fun when you don't overthink every thing.

  I want to thank every one for the comments on my post. I also would like to say I envy those that are capable of just getting up hitting the ball with no scales, figuring, formulas etc. but I need all the help I can get.

  The hands and reflexes are 78 years old, completely blind in one eye, and the remaining eye has Glaucoma and Macular Degeneration. I play on a 27inch monitor, full screen, wear this contraption on my head and hold a magnifying glass in my hand.

  Made a paper scale taped on my screen with the percentage lines. I use the Sgt Bilko Putting method, so i have those scales laying next to the monitor. Have another 27 inch monitor next to this one with the spread sheet and various notes on pitching, chipping etc. on the screen as I'm playing, I also use the the second computer for Skype.

  I'm the first to admit it looks and sounds kinda stupid, and I agree that all this figuring is a lot of work, but damn I'm sure having fun. I'm just happy that the 78 year old brain still lets me do all the figuring
