Can anyone tell me why the putter distance scale sometimes comes up as150 feet or 300 feet, even though the distance from the ball to the flagstick may be far less than that such as 20, 30, or 40 feet for example? I'm used to checking the scale more carefully now, but there was a time for instance when I released the ball in the middle of the scale thinking I was putting approx 30 feet of 60 feet, but then finding my ball rolling completely off the green due to unknowingly being on the 300 foot scale.

It's the default setting when putting from the fringe. It's been that way as long as I've been here (nearly 3 years) and probably a long time before that, so I don't think it's likely to change anytime soon, if at all.

You can check your lie by hovering your mouse over the ball icon at the bottom right of the game window if you are unsure of whether or not you're on the fringe. Best just to make the meter check part of your shot set-up routine, it'll soon become automatic.

Step 1 of my pre-shot routine: How far out am I?

This includes, which false advice will I receive, which kind of shot will I receive?

Step 2, when close to the green: Is it FW, green or fringe? If the latter, change scale accordingly.

The tactics is to know what is coming....
