r15 fairway wood

  What is the verdict ?

  I rented it last night , and was liking it , it seems loong, longer than the BB 89 ?!

  It is way more forgiving , so I am tempted to buy it, as ding missing the bb 89 is a pain in my behind.

  Hi, Siggi.

  I've got it rented  right now and I agree the distance is much longer than the 242 claimed.  I have a Ping G25 3W lvl 81, which is rated at 240, and the R15 seems much longer than just 2 yards.

  Can't try the BB 88 yet...that's a long ways off.  I'll be playing a few more rounds with the R15 while I have it, and let you know as to my 2nd shot distances on the Best of Par 5 F9 while i play.

  I just played Best of Par 5, F9, and on 7 shots where I used the R15 3W, I averaged 242.29 yds.  This was while using a WGT G13-S vapor ball, with no added distance.  Also, on Hole 6 (RSG #14), and Hole 8 (Kiawah) I ran off the greens past the pin.  All shots were full topspin.  At the speeds the balls ran off the greens, I'm guessing that it would have added another 5 yards each hole to the total distance.  That would have changed the average to 245.15 yds. Thats 3.15 yds above the rated distance.

  That's more than the average difference with my SLDR, compared to its 282 yd rating for this round.  It was 283.26 yds, or 1.26 yds above the rated distance.  Wind direction, and ding vs. off ding hits will have some impact.  But for me, I figure they average out.

  My CC has a tournament running, and my distance average with my SLDR has been in the 279-285 yd range all day on that course.

  I also compared the Ping G25 lvl 81 3W and the Callaway X2 Hot  lvl 73 3W.  The Ping was 1 yd longer in flight.  And 1.84 yds longer overall on 18 holes at Best of Par 5. Total distances for both were as follows:

  Ping 237.56 yds     X2Hot 235.72 yds. 

  And that was done in practice mode with mulligans.  Even with the actual distance recorded,the R15 had a 4.73 yards longer average.

  I just played a par 5 with a mate to test the r15s , and then he forgot to change his gear !

  It is a lovely 3 wood and a one I just might switch over to, I have the bb 89.

  Does seem to get up on those long par 4 and 5 pines.

  I have the r11 Irons , and anything else seems slow.

  works nicely on the 256 yard par 3 Merion too.

  Tried them both in practice BOP 5s, using full & half b/s on both on various approach shots on reachable par 5s using mulligans too , the R15 was about 2-3 yards shorter the BB, but played great, imo i think their both about  the same as far as forgiveness,                                                                                                                                                                                     BB has the R15 beat in stopping power though, but for players in the mid 80s levels  its a great club..

  Want it to be more forgiving and some went to the xhot2 3 wood.

  This is now a challenger for the best one.

  I keep hitting both (89-R15) and I can't make up my mind ! 

  Better landing vs. more forgiving ?? 

  p.s I found the bb 3 shorter on all tests with full bs.

  If only wgt could tempt me with a fresh set of rsi irons !!! 

  3 speed , and same stats as the old r11 irons.

  As Jimbog said they are ripe for a replacement.

  LOL i agree with you, a 3.0 meter "fresh" set of irons equivalent to the specs of the R11s would be sweet!   maybe cause we use different balls we got different distances?  comparing 3 woods, & yes if you really miss the ding on BB she could go anywhere :)   ,  so i guess the R15 is more forgiving..                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Glad i got to try the R15 3 wood, im contemplating getting it myself for backup..   when BB  acts  up ..

  Hi Siggi,

  Just tried both the R15 and my Ping lvl 81 3W again on Best of Par 5 B9.  Using that WGT G13 S vapor ball, with no enhanced distance, I found them to be virtually identical.  Played  all holes in mulligan format, with no driver, so shots were the same, same aiming point, etc, as much as possible.

  I had 8 dinged shots with the Ping compared to 5 for the R15 due to the meter speeds 3.5 vs 3.0.  I had one shot with the R15 on St Andrews where I caught a lucky bounce on top of the hill on the fairway and it ran down the back side further. A total of 265 yds.   But i could only do it once, as I pulled it left.  I also had one shot where I couldn't keep the R15 out of a bunker, due to hitting it a little late every time.

  Using the raw date, I found the following averages:

  Pin G25 lvl 81 4133 yds combined with 17 shots between tee and fairway shots, giving an average of 243.12.  R15 4363 yds combined with 18 shots between tee and fairway shots (with one more fairway shot) for an average of 242.39.

  Since most of the shots were within 1 yard between them, I find that if you throw out the fluke drive of 265 yds and the shot in the bunker of 199, and replace them with the Ping shots of 250 and 234 yds respectively on those holes, you get a total distance of 4382 yds for 18 shots, or 243.44 yds per shot average. Or 1.05 yards per shot.

  If you keep the fluke drive and throw out the bunker shot, and replace it with the distance from the Ping shot, you still only go to 244.33 yds average, or +1.21 yds per hole.

  My Ping G23 was 745 credits.  The R15 is 1395 credits.  I didn;t have any issues with the difference in forgiveness of 3.5 for the R15 vs. 3.0 for my Ping.  And I'm trying to change over to all clubs with a 3.5 meter speed.  So for me right now, my Ping works just fine.

  R15 3wd and ping lvl81 are identical in length. Both go further than the stated average, but after hitting hundreds of balls in practice with a variety of spin settings there is no noticeable distance advantage with the R15.

  There is however a very noticeable difference in meter speeds and cost. Ping is much cheaper. Considering the 0.5 stated meter speed difference, i am surprised how much faster the meter on the R15 is.  If you miss the ding on the R15, i found with the speed of the meter i was considerably late.

  I changed back to my ping lvl81.......

  R15 3wd just sits in my inventory.
