Just wondering if someone could help me out with the averages here. I am trying to get mine down to obtain the elusive TL  next to my name.

I know it is 500 ranked rounds at lower than 60 average, that part i get. But like lately i have been back playing this game properly (I.e charting clubs, thinking about landing zones, calculating wind,  blah blah blah) and getting good results by shooting 58's and 28's.

Since i have started to focus on my average, i noticed that when i have a great round like the above (and i have had a few in a row) my average drops by 0.03.... it doesn't matter if i shoot 57 or 61.

Is this just the stock standard number that it drops by? Also does it matter if i am playing a CC tournament and playing of the red tees rather than from the car park

OK  - first point is after saturation of 500 rounds, remember that not all those rounds are under 60, just the average, so a 69 and a 55 equals 124, average 62. So if ur 500 rounds rounds are comprised in a similar way, then dropping a 69 is going to have quite an impact, such as 0.03 drop.

Second point, as u get closer and closer to the 60.00 average then u will find the drop is almost always going to be 0.01. That's why the very last part of reaching 60.00 is the hardest.

Third point, play off the red tees is OK to get ur average down, but it will not help you in a competitive sense against players who did it all off the tips.

    Thanks for the reply.

with regards to your first point, i was just wondering if it always just 0.03 as it seems to have been the last week and a bit. I am currently at 64.12 from 64.15, 64.18 , 64.21, 64.24, 64.27, 64.30 and so on. Like i thought it was an average but seems to me that the drop is a set amount and doesnt matter what i shoot as long as it is under my 64 average (hope that makes sense)

Don't forget that the par 5 course and the par 3 one don't count towards your 500 either.

The amount of drop, if any, in your average after any ranked round, is determined by the score you make in that round.

A legends average score actually goes to 3 decimal places because it is divided by 500.

Therefore, as WGT only shows us 2 decimal places, any change in your score will sometimes, not show.

If, for example, you make a score in a round that is just 1 stroke better than the highest score in your 500 rounds. The drop in your average will be

Your current average is 64.12. As we cannot see the 3rd decimal place, let us assume it is 64.120.

Now, if we undo the average calculation by multiplying that by 500, it comes out to 32,060

So all your 500 best scores added together, comes out to 32,060 strokes, and the average calculation is worked out like so,

Now, if you make a score in a round which is one stroke better than the highest score in the 500 then it will drop the total number of stokes by 1.  32,060 - 1 = 32,059

Then your new average will become    which is a drop of 0.002.

Which will not be noticed as it is rounded by WGT to 2 decimal places and therefore will remain at 64.12.

    Nope, it's changing by calculation.

There are two "strange" things to consider:

    - At 500 rounds or close to it, it's a big denominator. One stroke off 500 numbers is 0.002 - too small for the two decimals in display.

    - At first, 1 to 500 rounds, it's a linear calculation behaving like we know it.
After 500 rounds in the pot, it's non-linear, because a good score will kick out a higher score, and the change in average will be their difference, divided by 500.

Add the two, and the progress may be slow and confusing.

As a general thought, you have way to go from 64.12. "Chasing the average" may be tiring from there, likely to cause some burn-out symptoms.

My 2 Pfennig: Concentrate on the fun and on your skills - TL will come by itself.

    Hit it straight!

Also bear in mind your "average" will not go up.

For example today I shot a 58 (9 Holes) and a 109 (18 Holes) using new clubs. My average stayed the same as obviously my best 500 scores are better than todays rounds.
