This setup is certainly a short-game workout. I played sort of like I do in real golf, chipping back and forth, except that here I was hitting the second chip close enough to make the putt. 10 putts for a 39 on the front, then 12 putts for a 37 after I managed to hit a few greens on the back. And I didn't make anything from outside 9 feet.
I started very sloppy with a missed green and a missed 7-footer for par on #1, then with a tailwind on #2 my wedge couldn't hold and I settled for bogey. Hit quite a nice approach on #3 for an easy birdie, which I figured would be my only chance of the round.
I played a little long on my third shot on #4, forgetting that it runs away past the hole. I did get up and down again for bogey. Then another sloppy bogey on #4 when I played too far to the right off the sidehill, missed the green, and ended up left of the green after four strokes instead of three. Ran long left on #6 but got up and down again, then hit a very poor hybrid into #7 and found the left bunker. I blasted out what I thought was a good shot, but it ran just far enough to catch the slope past the hole. Got up and down on my second try.
On #8 I was short, of course, and hit another nice wedge in to set up a tap-in par. I tried to play to the right side of the green on #9, but with a strong tailwind, I was between clubs and ended up choosing the shorter one and not getting up the front slope. But I was able to flop it to 6 feet and convert the par (no replay unfortunately).
#10 was pretty routine - driver, 3 wood, hit to the center of the green (wind was left to right), two putt from 60 feet after my first putt barely stayed on the green.
On #11 the wind was slightly helping, so my 3 wood second shot ran up within 50 yards of the hole. I figured the shot at just over 50 yards after adjustments, so I took the lob wedge and played a couple of ticks off of full spin to let it run up the hill. It worked out pretty well.
With a headwind on #12, I tried to hit a full-spin driver and land it on the red tees. It almost worked, but bounced too hard and wound up in 40-50% rough. Not that it mattered much; it was going to be a three-shot hole anyway. But I would have preferred a short iron. I hit a long iron for my third and got it on the green, but not in a makeable range.
I should have thought my shots through a little harder on #13. I played to the right side of the fairway because I always do, but that left no angle at the hole. I tried to run it up left of the hole but it came back off. Fortunately it's a pretty easy up-and-down. #14 also might have been a birdie chance with the strong tailwind I had, but I mishit the 3 wood and left it short of the green. A good pitch and the par was simple.
#15 was a bit of a mess. I tried to play to the middle of the green, but landed into the face of the hill and stayed short. My SW flop came off hot and ran across the green and almost into the sand... leaving a red lie. But red lies aren't too bad once you get used to them. I played a full SW pitch, which popped up into the air and settled a few feet past the hole for a bogey.
On #16 I had good wind and hit 9 iron for my third, leaving an 11 foot putt that was very makeable. But I didn't. That putt and the 7 footer on #1 were really the only makeable putts that I missed.
On the left edge on #17 and a two putt par. Then hacked my way up the hill on #18 and hit one last wedge to easy par range.
