Wondering how important people think it is to purchase a good putter on the game?

I didn't purchase any clubs until I reached master level but couldn't reach several fairways once the tees went back so I have got an iron and wood set now.  Although I am now hitting approach shots much closer I am missing too many putts.

Is it worth purchasing a putter?  Will it make putting consideraby easier or should I save my credits to buy a really good driver as I progress up the levels?

The short answer to your question is absolutely YES!

For me, fundamentally this games is 50% putting, 40% short game and 10% driving. Now I know some will want to argue with these numbers but the point being made is that 90% of this games comes down to about everything within 90 yds of the green and putting. Once you have gotten your short game down and have a sand and scrambling percentages above 50% your putter will make or break your rounds. There are 2 really great putters the redwood and daytona. I have had both but prefer the daytona. At the lower level I used Anser and Spider, for me the spider was the worst putter on here.

Make sure you have a good ball as well, at the lower tier I recommend the G13 Series D or S. The increased feel dots will slow down the meter enough for you to progress through the better clubs. Most would recommend the following for newer players to buy. Driver and putter first then after time irons and wedges. I do not like hybrids and have always carried a 3rd wedge since I was a tour pro but to each their own.

i too used starter clubs until just before making master, then i upgraded almost everything at once which took a bit to get used to.  I would say the putter will help in the long run, but allow for some adjustment time (this is why i do not like renting clubs).

I remember w/ the starter putter, I could "go for" most putts in the 15 ft range knowing it was almost a sure thing if I missed, i could tap in for a guaranteed 2 putt.  Pretty quickly w/ the redwood putter I could do the same thing from about 30 ft.  At first I had lots of 6 footers I hit "poorly" then cussed just to watch it roll in somehow (due to forgiveness i think, which is nice).

    good luck

I agree, my scrambling is above 50% so if I could actually hole some putts from further than 5 foot I could really get my scores down.  I doubt I will purchase any balls as it tends to make me play a lot safer as I hate losing them but will definitely look into getting a putter
