Hi all
I've got a reasonable amount of experience in IT and how the Internet works. I work for an ISP as a systems engineer, specialising in BGP, interconnects and general routing.
I think it was PhiEaglesFan in another thread a few weeks ago, who gave a pretty accurate description of how WGT delivers content to all of us.
They utilise a Content Delivery Network company, which basically means they pay another company who has a global presence, to deliver their content to us via "local" servers.
The elephant in the room is this:
Why don't WGT use Akamai? More than 30% of the global Internet traffic is delivered via Akamai. Including all your Microsoft updates, Call Of Duty games etc etc.
So...is it a cost thing? Or is it a stupidity thing?
It's not your connection. It's not whether you are connected via wireless to your ADSL router or via ethernet. It's not your upstream provider. It's not your contention ratio. It's not the country you live in.
It's how the content is delivered.
Why don't WGT use Akamai? That is the question everyone should be asking.
Regards,
Peter
