Does anyone know a good piece of software to recover data from a crashed external hard drive?  Both of my Comodo browsers,( Comodo Dragon and Comodo Ice Dragon) are on the crashed hard drive. So at the present time I am playing With Microsoft Edge, a decent browser but not as good as CD.

Chkdsk won't work with the drive at all. And I tried EaseUs Data recovery software with no success.

    Thanks.

Download Gparted, run it live (unless you are running Linux on something), if the drive is readable, I've used this many times to mover partitions to new drives to recover data.

There's a ton of applications for this stuff.

What happens when you attempt to run chkdsk, any error message?

You might try Recuva. It is a product by Piriform who make CCleaner. There is a free version which will at least tell you if the files are retrievable but to get the entire file back would likely involve a nominal free

Scott, when I try to run chkdsk I get the error message something similar to " chkdsk cannot run on a raw drive" meaning chkdsk sees the drive as unformatted.

    BTB -

DO NOT format the drive. Your file info is still there.

If the volume filesystem type information is unavailable, attempting CHKDSK against the volume will result in the following message:

The type of the filesystem is RAW.
CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives.

Sometimes a damaged volume may look like it lost its filesystem type, but in fact it has not. All CHKDSK does is advise you that it is unable to process a RAW filesystem recovery.

The filesystem type is recorded in at least two separate places

    • In the partition table (MBR, sometimes referred to as a legacy-style partition) or in the LDM database (when dynamic disks are used).
    • In the volume boot sector.

Sometimes, the volume fails in such a way that it becomes RAW. In most cases the failure is associated with a sudden reboot (power failure or a STOP error and the BIG NO-NO, Removing the external drive w/o first using the eject command). Several causes are possible: partition table, LDM database, or volume boot sector corruption, or (on the NTFS volume) when certain records in both MFT and MFT mirror are damaged beyond easy recognition.

It isn't as easy to recover a hard drive as some would make it sound, especially if the boot record is corrupted.

If you have a Geek Squad or Computer Service Store near you, they can surely fix it for you for a reasonable fee in a day or so.

ive had a few fried HDDs in my time and if the freezer trick doesn't work for a super dead drive, I used a program called HDD Regenerator.

its the only one that worked for a seriously dead drive and it managed to patch my 1tb drive up enough for me to get important files off - it will probably not fix the entire HDD but enough to recover stuff from.

its worth 100 bucks so if u look through a few torrent sites there are cracked versions which work (I used one).

basically u install the program on a usb stick and it runs in dos mode.

once installed on the stick get the computer to boot thru usb and have the dead drive hooked up - itll find it and start the process. mine took 3 days cos its slow and the hdd was super dead. no idea how long it will take u.

I use Data Rescue by Prosoft.

Accidentally deleted everything off my 3rd HD while formatting multiple drives, gigs worth of data, images etc. Recovered mostly everything, especially projects.

Had a dead Boot drive as well. Couldn't access it. I recovered 80% and bought a new drive.
