Just played Pinehurst and had two flop shots

Watching from behind the pin - the first one looked on line for the hole, so when it was halfway there, I removed the pin - got the Pin removed message - ball hits pin that is not there and bounces back 2 inches?

Second time, played the same idea and again removed pin when ball was on the move - this time it hits the pin that is not there and does drop.

So when does removing the pin , not remove it??

Would be good to know for future reference...

First pull the pin, than shoot.... Not while the ball is mid-flight. I used to have the same problem lol.
