OK... I havent read all of this stuff, so, give me that... I read a couple of comments, and knew that was enough that I knew I better say something.
FIRST OF ALL...
I had been out all day, and had just gotten home, and got a skype message from a friend asking me if I wanted a game. I agreed and logged straight into the game client. We played 9 holes, and as soon as my light went green, I got an invite, which I assumed was for a friendly game, from OneEyedJohn.
I didnt pay any attention to the specifics, and went straight into the lobby.
The conversation went something like this:
Shelly: Hi John
John: So, do you want to get this thing over with?
Shelly: What thing?
John: mwc
Shelly: What is mwc?
John: Mini World Cup
Shelly: Oh, Im playing against you now? What happened to my opponent?
John: He hasnt been around, so -I'm the substitute. [Tee Off ]
-------------------------------------------------
So, he never asked me if it was ok to play the tournament... That was how I found out that there had been a change to the lineup, and I was upgraded to the owner of Cosa Nostra. Im sorry, but that is about as un-classy as it gets. You just dont do that.
-------------------------------------------------
Once in the game, Our conversation continued:
Shelly: I had not given up on my opponent. I am aware that he generally only plays a couple times a week. Thats fine. I only mentioned it to Peter, that we had not yet communicated, because I think its a good idea to keep people informed of what is going on. It had only been 5 days, and there were 9 days left to play the game. I wasnt that worried about it
John: Well, Im the substitute now, so its done.
Shelly: In all fairness, I did not even know until this moment that you were going to be my opponent. I think it is only fair to let a person know first. And, Im pretty sure the tournament rules say that you are supposed to get in touch with your opponent, and give days and times that you are available to play, and work something out together, set an appointment, and be there at the time you agree on. This is not a good time for me to play a tournament. I am babysitting my grandkids right now
John: Well, what were you going to do?
I was going to play a friendly game, I assumed it was 9 holes, maybe I should have looked, but I didnt realize you were my opponent in the World Cup games, now and, while, playing a friendly is fine, this is not an environment that is condusive to "Tournament Play". When I am playing a tournament, I like to have everything in order. I am not prepared at this moment. Is there another time we can play?
John: Let me know what you want to do [ forfeit ]
------------------------------------------------------
Quite frankly, I was FURIOUS the entire rest of the day... I thought it was kinda scummy to trick me into the game that way. I NEVER agreed in the lobby before he teed off, and we had both in fact taken shots while typiing back and forth, but as far as I am concerned, that was only to faciilitate continuing our conversation.
Paul, you make the call... Im gonna go read the rest of this crap thats been written in my absence.
