I agree with your sentiments exactly. this really pisses me off a lot. Am a fairly new player and always keen for a game and also what gets up my nose is people who kick you out of a game in the lobby.
They were all lower tiered players once upon a time.
I must admit I do enjoy beating somebody of a much higher tier and who owns flash equipment etc lol
Apex has a valid point. Those who set the games decide who plays...I personally try to select people where I can balance the teams, so either side has a legitimate chance to win...(ergo my 50-50 record in Alt)... I would recommend that you start setting your own games. Problem solved.
