I worked out that a 20-30% lie in the rough/sand etc doesn't reduce shot distance by 20-30%, as doesn't 50-60% etc etc. Has anyone worked out more accurately how much the % lie actually affects distance?

It represents the amount of ball surface covered by the lie.

As in real golf your sand-wedge is the least effected by the lie. Its the heaviest club in your baf with bounce.

Maybe a 60 degree wedge in a 20-30 lie may be effected by less than 5 yards but may roll out close to the normal distance of the shot..Of course wind and spin applied must be taken into consideration.

As you climb your set, the distance of each longer club gets effected even more. Also slight miss-hits on your ding line can drastically effect your shot as well as VEMIE.

Keep track of all your results. Experience will tell you about what too expect.

It varies between courses too. Oakmont and Bethpage have the rougher rough.

On a 20-30% lie, I add 15% to the distance.  On a 50-60% lie, I add 30% to the distance.  Seems to work well for me.

And in 80-90% lie, I quit the game.

For short clubs there is little effect and going longer there is progressively more effect, same as with the other roughs.  From 100 yards and in at most I add 1-2 yards.  Long irons out of 20-30% rough generally carry one club less distance but then roll to almost their rated distance.  3W is not good though, if you don't need much carry it'll go about 200 especially if you punch it.  Hybrids have much greater carry out of 20-30% rough.  For instance roughly my 225 3W carries 140y, and my 220 hybrid carries 180y.

For the newer players not yet familiar with a long rough shot...the 3Wood punch often advances you farther down the fairway than a 3Wood regular shot does. It can be dangerous and not work all the time, especially out of fescue at St A's, also you will want it "clear" in front of you, as it won't clear traps, hazards, etc. (The 3Wood punch can go 200 yds plus, whereas a 3Wood regular shot from that rough would not go half as far.)

I remember a long time ago I was lucky enough to play a game at BP with NCVIZ, she is one of the "spooky  good one's" on WGT. She told me how to do it and I have been grateful for the advice ever since, it has saved a lot of shots for me.

You do need to practice the 3Wood punch and it will betray you on occasions, when you don't factor in the lie and percentage of rough carefully enough. As this ridiculous 3Wood punch attempt at Oakmont of mine depicts (it actually went backwards into a sand trap....lol.)

3Wood punch goes backwards ???    LOL

    I pay no attention to 25 -30%, only 30 - 40% and above.

Even a chip shot of 11 yards from 20-30% I hit 10 with full BS, and its perfect.
