I am having a devil of a time figuring out how to get close on the third hole.  Any brilliant ideas?

I'd just like to have it stay on the green.

in low wind i generally play a full 6 iron (180yds) with full backspin, aimed just left of the pin. with mid level clubs you can land short of the green, left of the greenside front bunker and the natural roll of the green will get you reasonably close; the power you use is ofcourse the key to this shot.

This is where having 3 wedges instead of 2 and a hybrid pays dividends. Drive short of the mound and use a punched or full swing wedge from there. Back spin will control the shot-top into wind, back with wind. The key is having 6 different yardages covered with 3 wedges and knowing how to use them. That hole should be a fairly regular birdie for you.

A word on that particular green. Kiawah was an early effort by WGT to map greens and they didn't get it exactly right on that course. The 3rd green happens to be the worst in the game, IMO. 4 foot putts are always an adventure. They've made great progress in mapping since then but have never bothered to go back and refine what they did there. Getting close is paramount and that's where all those shot choices will solve your problem.

p.s., You really would use a 3rd wedge way more than that HB. ;-)

YJ, your advice is sound, except that there is no second shot on CTTH, lol. To the OP, I've had best results using 185 yd. iron at about 92% power and a tad topspin . Also key is to hit just left of ding (placement adjusted for wind) as anything else is bunker for sure. Good luck.

    Doc :)

Edit: The only time I have seen this hole aced was in Blitz with low winds and very fast greens, the ball landed here, and the rough scrubbed off enough speed so it dropped in off the pin. photo Kiahwah 3_zps3uwzetq3.jpg

    Doc :)

Sheesh, you'd think the reference to the 180 yard iron woulda been a clue.  Oy with a big ol vey for being the dimwit.  :-|
