One suggestion I would add is this... If you are going to use a 9-hole round it should be pro-rated to an 18 hole round properly, not just by multiplying by two!  Now the formula that you would use is anyones guess, and may need to depend on the difficulty of that particular set of 9 holes.  FWIW this is how I would rank each set of 9-holes according to difficulty, 1 being the hardest to 4 being the easiest.

    1.  Back 9 BPB (1.9)

    2.  Front 9 Kiawah (1.95)

    3.  Front 9 PBP (2.1)

    4.  Back 9 Kiawah (2.2)

The numbers in parenthesis are just rough multipliers to pro-rate to an 18 hole round.  These numbers are up for debate, and there are many other circumstances to take into account, but it gives you a general starting point.

    Good Luck to you sir!

That's a great point, AvatarLee. There's probably a way to figure out a realistic 9-hole pro-ration, maybe by averaging the 9-hole scores for each set of all the top players. I'll get on that, and thanks again for bringing that up.

P.S.: I'm sure you already know, but you'll be pretty high in the rankings!

have we considered using the usga system to set up player handicaps?  I'm sure we can find out the slopes and ratings.

    I checked that, ChrisCrosby. For BPB, front 9 = 38.3, back 9 = 38.3, total = 76.6, with a slope of 144.

I personally have a 71.67 average at this time, which is .67 above BPB par. So I could round that up to a 0.7 handicap and figure out the course handicap, which is 1.0 for me.

For Kiawah, front 9 =36.6, back 9 = 36.8, total = 73.4, with a slope of 139. My average is .33 below Kiawah par, so, rounding to a .3 handicap, my Kiawah course handicap would be 0.

What I'd have to do is figure out the average of just rounds played on that course. That could be done for players with averages above 68.50 for Kiawah and 67.50 for Bethpage, because the USGA calculator only takes players with handicaps between +3.5 and 36.4.

I'll give you another example, with my good friend EllisSpice being used. (This includes tournaments.) His course handicap for nine holes at Bethpage Black is 6, and for 18, it's 15. I decided to pro-rate it for 18 holes being more accurate by adding 18-hole CH * 1.5. So the equation is [9CH + 18CH + (18CH*1.5)] / 2. For EllisSpice, his course handicap for BPB is 14.3. For Kiawah, [5 + 3 + (3*1.5)] / 2 = 6.25.

I can use this as well for the ranking system. I'm working on it guys! Hold out hope.

    Hi,

I disagree with the use of multiplayer format rounds, they may be ranked but they are not to my mind a true representation of the players ability in any way shape or form.

As I said previously they are really just a fun round with friends, nothing more nothing less.

    Just my 2bobs worth.

    Cheers Doug

Before I joined WGT I was a forum junkie in many areas, and some of the best stuff to read was from the very early days of those forums.

Going back years can be fascinating.

What you are missing is that this thread is almost 4 years old. And those rankings are almost 4 years old. The clubs and balls that they had to play with are some of the poorest that we have now. And much of what they had was only available for a short time when those rankings were made. What they did with the starter clubs and balls most of us can only dream of.
