  The driver that comes included should hit at least 250 to make the courses playable. When you hit all of a driver and all of a 3 wood and are still over 100 yrds from the green that is a par 5, not 4. And my favorite hitting all of a driver and it not even being able to reach the fairway.

  The game offers "play for free".  It doesn;t promise that you will be good at it or competitive at it.  To play better you need to upgrade your equipment.  Pay for that by earning free credits thru surevys, watching videos, or buying credits.

  If you decide you want to upgrade, available at your level (L59) is the Ping G25 complete set for 4495 credits.  It's better than what you have now, even though the driver and 3W aren't as good as others offered at a higher cost.  

  You also need some better wedges to improve your short game.  the ATV wedges around Level 39 are OK.  They are 495 credits each.  Minimum would be a 60 and 64 degree.  A 56 degree can be used to replace the hybrid.  Better balls and a putter will help also.

  It's up to you.  That you have made it to Tour Pro using just the starter equipment is an achievement in and of itself.  But better equipment will help you improve more.  How much you can or are willing to spend will control just how good your equipment will be.

  Good post by phred952 and sums up the game. WGt is a business and the model is unique in that it does allow anyone to play for free, but you will be handicapped with your clubs.

  The G25's are very good and they took me to legend using the Tour SD ball. I took the plunge to upgrade when I hit Master Tier - starters were just too hard. Yes my game improved markedly, but so did my enjoyment particularly in multi-player games. In fact, I regretted not doing it earlier.

  Also @ the OP, being in the US there are generally a lot of surveys and videos you can do to "earn" credits without actually spending cash........it will take some time and perseverance, but if you have the time, it will be easier on your pocket.

  Above all, have fun and set yourself targets.

  The ONLY thing you need is to learn to score with the freebies.  It teaches you how hit all shots.  When you have enough credits built up from advancing levels then get a driver that will allow you to reach the fairway. Now you'll have the distance AND the knowhow to start EARNING credits from your opponents, upgrading as you go/improve. 

  What's the point in taking the scenic route?  FREE play. Let the chumps pay your way  :)

  This makes perfect sense if he wins more than he loses...if he doesn't, then he becomes the "chump" paying for the upgrades of his opponents. I think it's a safe assumption that people put credits on the line only when they believe they have a good chance to win.

  Most hobbies cost some money...bowling, martial arts, music, going to the movies, etc. I think Phred's suggestion of spending the 45 bucks for the entire set is reasonable...and still quite inexpensive compared to other forms of entertainment.

  Memories...

  I took the scenic route then, and until hitting Master I was thrifty when it came to buying clubs. A 3WD to replace the driver (look at L48) + 2x ATV (then Z-Satin, L39) were enough, later, I added the Rossa putter (L55) and started to pay for balls (Tour-SD). Big fun to beat unsuspecting Masters then, without a driver!

  The caveat: Any better equipment will bring you closer to tiering up, and faster!, requiring more and better equipment. Alas, as others said, invest in your fun & leisure like you do in other cases, too.
