Ok, bit of a long one and hopefully more experienced players on here can give me some valuable advice on what to buy and when. I'm currently a level 50 (soon to be 51) player and getting sick and tired of the started gear and ball it's time to upgrade on a few things.

So here goes, I currently have 6000 credits to play with a would ideally like:

Driver: Have seen lots of people mention the R1? There seems to be two available of the R1 Aldila 55 (1995 cr) & 65 (2495 cr)? Any others I should be thinking about? I assume the more expensive R1 would be the better choice?

Irons: Really have no idea about on which to get?

    Wedges: Again no idea,

Putter: I currently have the ping anser 2, though not ideal I may well keep if I have to spend all my money on driver, Irons and Wedges.

All input would be very welcome I don't really want to spank my credits without going in the right direction first. Thank you!

Hi congrats on learning to play with the starter gear.  While you have no scoring history, I see that you have a good record in both AS and MP.

I think everyone will tell you to try and hold out until you reach level 59 and can get the Ping G25 Irons.  They are the first high trajectory irons available.  lvl 59 requires about 88K XP's.  At lvl 51 you will have about 58K XPs.

I also think that everyone will suggest the ATV Wedges available at lvl 39 for 495 each.  You would want to get the 64* (50 yd), 60* (77 yd) and the 54* (98 yd), as the distances on those wedges step funny.  The ping set PW is 115 yds.

I took a slightly different approach as I bought the full lvl 59 Ping G25 set for 4495 credits as I also had to work within a budget.  While the specs on it aren't as good as the other drivers you mentioned I found it to be good enough for my needs.  That also gave me a decent 3W.  While that Ping 3W isn't as good as the L33 X2Hot 3W it's less than 1/2 the cost.

I know some will disagree with that advise and i understand why, but when working within a budget it made sense to me.

As far as balls I used to use the WGT G13-S balls until I felt the need to go to the Cally L33 at that time.  I hope this helps a bit.  And remember, your experience may vary.

    Good luck.

I won't suggest brands for you but because I am not real good at getting the ding on the meter so what helps me the most is forgiveness and meter speed check out my profile if you like  when you get to higher level IMHO I think the M1 is under rated, best driver I ever had.

I can only recommend what ive owned but In regard to driver/three woods, you can't go wrong with the R1 L48 driver & the Big Bertha L19 3 wood (the only one I think that has 1.5 backspin), that benefit can be very useful on long par 3s and par 5s

    +1!

Let me add that the putter will be o.k. for a long time, plenty of time to adjust to the very fast greens. Good putters start at L66, Ghost Spider, Versa, Nike...

Thanks for all the replies so far. After looking through and the budget I have I was thinking of getting this:

    6000 Credits:

    To buy now:

    Driver: R1 Adila (L48+) 2495 credits

    Wedges: ATV 54, 60, 64 (1485 credits for all 3)

To buy when at level 59:

    Irons: Ping G25 (2395 credits)

    OR!!!
I wait until level 59, but the full set of Ping G25 for 4495 and I get the added bonus of a decent 3 wood & Hybrid included, and I'll still have enough to purchase the 3 ATV wedges as above??
    HELP!!!

If credits aren't an issue go with the TM L48, ATV's and L59 ping irons.  That driver is hands down better than the ping you'd get in that set, and as others have said you won't have to upgrade again until Legend.

For a 3W, look at the L46 Nike, has much better forgiveness than the 3W you'd get in that set.  If you hit the ding most of the time, that won't be an issue though.

In the end it comes down to what you can afford.  You will get clubs with better specs buying them individually instead of in a set.  The R1 Driver will out perform the Ping G25 Driver.  No question about that.  The Nike Vapor Pro 3W @ lvl 46 is probably better than the Ping, but it cost 995 credits, the same as that Lvl 19 Big Bertha.  And the Stats on the Nike are better that the Big Bertha.

Perhaps the best way to decide is to track how often you currently use your 3W when playing all courses except the Best of Par 5.  Also look at your driving distances and your approach shot distances.  How much will the longer driver shorten your approach shots?  Will an additional 5 yards minimum with the R1 compared to the Ping make an even greater difference?

You may find you only use the 3W 1 or 2 times per round.  If so then you might be able to live with the starter 3W for a while longer.  And plan to go to the 3 wedge set up and get rid of the hybrid.  A third wedge is far more useful than a hybrid.

As I said before, I went the way of the Ping G25 full set and the 3 ATV wedges.  I got the iron set i really wanted and the bonus of a serviceable Driver and 3W (along with a useless hybrid, lol) for 395 credits less than just the R1 and the G25 irons.  To me personally it was a better deal.

Hope this helps a bit and Good Luck.

I personally would recommend taking in everyone's suggestions, then waiting for a free rental weekend (hopefully one will be coming soon with the holiday season but we have had many lately) and evaluate their suggestions yourself & find what works best for you.

While the L59 G25 irons are almost universally recommended, there are plenty of other good irons as well.  As for wedges, I believe the L50-52 Max Spin wedges are miles better than the recommended ATV's and, depending on how you play, may darn well be the best wedges in the game.

Plus, some suggestions are pure silliness:

    alosso:
    Good putters start at L66

This from someone who, at least at the time of this writing, has a L55 Daytona in his bag.  Priceless!  I also use a Daytona because it works best for me.  But putters are highly subjective so, if possible, try many.

Remember, what works for many may not always work best for you.  I made Champion using WGT balls almost exclusively and I still do.  I feel confident that no one would advise doing that, but I personally find it much easier to calculate shots when using a ball with a spin rating of 2 or less.  My game is thoroughly useless with a 'good' ball.

Thankfully the game offers us many equipment options.  Best of luck finding a combo that works for you.
