The holes with the huge drop in elevation throw me off. Is there a rule of thumb for calculating yardage on holes like this?

Don't calculate,  hit to the distance depending on wind and put backspin on...

Hey mate. On shots with large drops in elevation I do a little math - subtract 3.5 yds for every 12ft drop in elevation. As an example, I believe one of the holes (the 9th?) is a 107ft drop in elevation. So I'd do 107/12=8.9166, then 8.9166*3.5=31.2, so I'd subtract 31yds from the total distance. Give it a try!

    Happy golfing, and Happy Holidays.

Or just do what I do. Back off a club or two, depending on the wind, hit it, and pray.

Remember, the ball will stay in the air longer, so the wind will have more effect on it.

I take a bit of a simpler approach as posted above. I just calculate about -3 yards for about every -10 feet of elevation.* And if the wind is behind me, I use backspin; if it's into the wind I use top spin. The killer are the crosswinds.

On the 9th hole of Chambers, if there's a left to right wind, I find that I have to aim well to the left of the pin. As the person above notes, the ball is the air for quite some time, which means the wind has a huge effect. In any case, if I recall correctly, I play that tee shot at about 180 yards from the tips, which a full shot with my 6 iron.

*By the way, 3 yards for every 10 feet works about the same as the formula posted above. But I think it's easier to calculate in one's head. :-)

I do the straight math-subtract 1 yard for every 3 feet. The 232 yard pin plays 210 before wind and then you look at what the wind will do to that. IMO, the wind is what causes the most problem simply because the ball is in the air much longer. You can get the distance right and still be mile away.

The other par 3 (218?)  plays 183 before wind.

That's about how I was calculating distance for wind. I just can't seem to get within birdy distance.

For BIG drops in elavation dont use the 1/3 conversion back from feet to yards, try 1/5

Hole 9: play it like 188 yards, even though the real i 218.

Play it left of the hole, use full backspin (hope you have a good ball) and let the slope do the work.

Due to longer airtime you need to aim further out to the side than you normally will.

And due to longer airtime, facewind needs more extra club than usual and tailwind needs less club than usual. Just be sure to clear the bunker.

Hole 14: play it like 212 and long left of the pin with some good backspin is the wisest shot.
