Prior to today, I was using the Tour Plus driver and 3wood, Starter Plus hybrid and Irons, Starter Wedges, and the Spider putter.  I am a player that is very good at reading winds, elevations, greens.  But I am an older player that struggles with faster meters.  Anyway, today I upgraded to the Tour Plus hybrid and Irons, and the two Satin wedges.

I have a ranked avg. of 71.75.  My first round with the new clubs I shot a 63 at Kiawah Island.  My driving was slightly better, which I attribute to not feeling like I have to milk every inch I can from my driver.  It's around 70-75%  But my greens went from 60-70% up to 85%, and my putting numbers improved greatly due to my avg. distance to the hole on the green nearly being cut in half (30' to 16')

Looking forward to upgrading to the Rapture 255 Driver and perhaps irons.  When I get the driver, gonna drop the hybrid for a 64 wedge.  Also just unlocked the Callaway balls, which I'll save for when I start playing ranked and tourneys again.  For now, gonna stick to practice for fear of ranking up in tiers more than my equipment is prepared for just now.

One thing I did notice with the Satin wedges.  Even though the meters make it so that I can only ding through dumb luck, I can stay close to the mark on the meter, and they are so much more forgiving and precise than the ones I used before, that I am getting a lot better accuracy despite worse performance on the meter.

Any suggestions for equipment for a player that is really quite gifted at reading shots but struggles with fast meters, that will make me more competitve at the higher tiers, would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, in addition to the dramatic increase in GIR, out of the, what 3 greens I missed (85%), with the new wedges my scrambling was 100%, and I didn't find sand the entire round.  best round I have played since joining by far.

Most interesting... and in the end very promising, though obviously with some work to do.  My second adventure with the new clubs was a random practice 9 (well, 18 but I only felt like playing 9) at Bethpage, with hard tees, slow greens and moderate winds.  Things returned to the norm...sort of.  I shot par, but I missed one fairway and one green.  I missed 8 birdie putts, 6 of them within 18', the shortest 7'.  The funny thing is that the only fairway and green I missed were the same hole, a 508 yard par 4.  I first cut 30-40% my drive, then managed to hammer a 3W to the rough around the green 20-25%.  Pitched out to 2' and made the putt.

Anyway, I will take that kind of accuracy off the tee and fairway every day.  I had a chance to run a good -6 or -7 front 9 if I could have putted consistently.  The Spider had felt comfortable but I was erratic with it at Bethpage.  I was reading the putts right but off with my meters, and lipped out 4, leaving the others within 2'.  I had the right read, but missed my mark with the meter.  But my options are rather limited.  The Anser has less forgiveness and a faster meter, but it's more precise.  I can't see how that will help me if I can't hit the mark.  I think my best bet for now is just to keep practicing with the Spider.

Two other things of note:  I rented the Ping Rapture (247) driver.  Oddly, it is almost identical to the Tour Plus for me, with 5-10 extra yards in some winds due to increased spin.  The slightly faster meter was offset by what felt like more forgiveness for slight mishits.  However, as I was using the Callaway s(i) ball for the first time, rather than the Tour-SD, that may be the only difference in performance in the two.  It does make me excited to get to the higher Rapture, if I can get the same accuracy with a dozen or two extra yards.  By then (L47), I'll have the Tour i(z), with will give me more distance as well.  Also wonder if the new ball may have affected my erratic putting.  I had been playing the WGT balls.  THough in truth, it just felt like I was a hair or two off on my mark thus missing by a few degrees.  Excellent pace, for the most part, though I did misjudge it on one downhill putt curving against the break and left a 17 footer 2.5' short..

Curious about the balls.  A question:  The Tour s(i) has a full ball less distance but a full ball more spin than the i(z).  How does that translate distance-wise, especially considering backspin carry on tailwinds?  Is the i(z) significantly longer than the s(i)?

The performance of my current set from the tees and fairways makes me very excited about my game when I move up to the Rapture irons and longer driver.

One last little note... it has been at least 27 holes since I have seen a bunker.  I'm not sure if that is good or bad.  At some point, since these are 'practice' rounds, should I hit some shots into the gorse, as they say... intentionally hit some bunkers to work on my sand and jungle game?  As we don't have practice greens... yet.  Or a driving range, all of which would be awesome.

Yeah, I played a few of the free stroke play tourneys.  Interesting progression.  The first I shot a 75 for 18, the second a 73, and the third was a 9 hole I shot 35 (70).  So I improved by 2 strokes per.

But I am not going to play any more, or any more ranked games, until I get the longer driver.  I'll be happy refining what I have now until then.  Then I should be able to be competitive in my tier.  I'm concerned about ranking up in tiers before my equipment is ready for it.

I just wanted to try the Callaway ball, but I'm going to go back to the Tour-SD.  I find $0.22 more palatable per ball than $0.83 when I am just practicing.  Though I suppose with the durability difference, it works out to more like $0.83 and $0.40, give or take.

    Aaauugghhh!  I feel sick.

Third adventure with the new clubs, an even round at St. Andrews with hard tees, standard greens, and moderate winds (17 to 22 MPH).  In 18 holes, I had two eagle putts and 17 birdie putts, 90% of which were inside 20 feet.  I made three birdies, two of which I offset with bogey three putts.  Excluding par 3s, I missed one fairway.  I missed one green total.  Even my third bogey included a missed 7' par putt.

I really feel like I should have shot 60-62.  My game tee to green right now is very crisp.  I feel like even on the hardest greens I'm going to give myself a bundle of quality scoring chances.  But the greens...

I need to get to the point where I am consistently making those putts inside 20', and I'm not really close now.  I like the meter of the Spider, but it's not working.  Gonna rent an Anser and see how that feels.  If I can make those inside 20', I feel even with the shorter clubs I'm currently using, I can score consistently in the low 60s with hard tees, moderate winds, and standard greens.  With some longer sticks, who knows.

So still quite excited about my prospects.  Here's the thing:  It's so realistic, but it's not real.  So there is no such thing as a hitch in my putting stroke or anything of that nature.  Even if I have to go back to a beginner putter, eventually with practice I'm gonna find that stroke.  But right now... frustrating.  At St. Andrews, all but one of my mishits came on the last two holes (excluding putts, which were mishit throughout the round).  I attribute a lot of that to a combination of frustration and trying to be too fine to limit my putting distance.  I was trying to hit the pins on the last three, and a bit too aggressive.

On a different note, I did find one trap this time, which I saved, and I missed one scramble, which included a missed 7' par putt.  Seems to be something of a theme.

I was going to play Oakmont, but the way I am struggling with the flat stick, I'm afraid that would be a scary proposition.

So do I. He started up this thread. I didn't mention any names WGTicon, so no need to put the X's in.
