I was comped a Merion Vapor ball. When I'm used to a course and playing a tournament, I use Srixon Z-Star Plus (L11+). The difference between the two is the Merion is rated 2.5 for distance and 2.0 for spin with the Srixon being the other way around.

I would be interested in preferences for playing a ball for spin or distance, if anyone cares to share.

    Cheers,

This is like asking what's more important in a racing car, horsepower or brakes.

Answer is the same: It depends on the track.

There are courses where distance truly matters. There are others where stopping the ball on a hard green is more important.

The 0.5 differences won't show too much, but I'd prefer spin over distance.

It's spin which makes the shots more precise, stopping close to where you're shooting at.

Distance dots, OTOH, requires new charts of the clubs - they may be significantly longer by a few yards. And without spin, the balls may roll over the place...

Be careful to use (high) performance balls with (high) performance clubs only. Otherwise, the effect will not show fully.

That Merion ball is actually a Srixon in disguise, but a L13 one, not the one you're using (L11, which is IMO one of the top 3 best buys, when it comes to balls). I would agree with alosso, that at this level, spin is better than distance. BUT, with balls that have more spin (high level Nikes), higher spin rate will mean LESS precise shots, cause the wind and any slightly missed ding will have a far greater affect on both distance and direction.

For example, Nike L90 platinum vs. black. The black has 0,4 less spin and 0,5 more distance. The difference is huge. The black outdrives the platinum by at least 5 yards every time, and the spin on it is more than enough and much more controlable. Plus you won't lose nearly as much distance with full bs shots in head wind, could be as much as 10 yards difference.

Although, until you get better irons (at least G25s), you really won't notice any difference. Your current set has way too little spin and too low of a trajectory for you to notice any difference.

Go back to basics, use the free balls. Dollar for dollar they are the best value. ;)

    Actually, I think they're a bit overpriced. ;-)

I certainly notice a difference over the starter clubs, and with the Srixon over the starter ball. The Srixons stop on a dime with the high loft clubs, and check more on the greens with lower. I do also notice the wind taking some shots far more off target than the missed ding would seem to indicate. At other times (when I've set up wide intentionally) it won't react at all. I haven't sussed out the why of those disparate results yet.

    2 questions -

    1. I cant seem to find the most updated CHART on durability and or # of Hits for each ball WGT offers. And I cant seem to find in forum anywhere.

Anyone have that chart they can post in here?

    2. I believe I read somewhere that putts do not count against a balls durability / life span. Is that still true?

    Thanks - TJ

    1) Here.

In general, it states that durability 1 equal ca. 90 hits and 2.5 equals 120 hits. There is no information on newer balls like MAX.

On this list, B-ES, GI2-S and GI3-S show 125 hits though they are durability 2 balls only.

    2) Yes. Putts from the green do not count, ?except in the putting CTTH?
