I was comped a Merion Vapor ball. When I'm used to a course and playing a tournament, I use Srixon Z-Star Plus (L11+). The difference between the two is the Merion is rated 2.5 for distance and 2.0 for spin with the Srixon being the other way around.
I would be interested in preferences for playing a ball for spin or distance, if anyone cares to share.
Cheers,
That Merion ball is actually a Srixon in disguise, but a L13 one, not the one you're using (L11, which is IMO one of the top 3 best buys, when it comes to balls). I would agree with alosso, that at this level, spin is better than distance. BUT, with balls that have more spin (high level Nikes), higher spin rate will mean LESS precise shots, cause the wind and any slightly missed ding will have a far greater affect on both distance and direction.
For example, Nike L90 platinum vs. black. The black has 0,4 less spin and 0,5 more distance. The difference is huge. The black outdrives the platinum by at least 5 yards every time, and the spin on it is more than enough and much more controlable. Plus you won't lose nearly as much distance with full bs shots in head wind, could be as much as 10 yards difference.
Although, until you get better irons (at least G25s), you really won't notice any difference. Your current set has way too little spin and too low of a trajectory for you to notice any difference.
