    Scenario:

On the green at St. Andrews #17 about to hit 3rd shot:

The ball is on the green.

    Wedge or putt?

    Bird attempt or play safe?

    Cheers for any input.

98% full wedge 5 ft right of pin.

    I like your thinking.

That will clear the bunker, Phil?  I'm never sure when calculating the distance for wedge shots on the green.

Double the distance (feet) and divide by 3?

    Thanks for the prompt response.

Update:  Spot on with the advice btw.

Nice shot. As for my knowledge of wedging on greens, it really is minimal as I only use it in circumstances such as yours.

If I had that shot I would hit the clubhouse for a beer.

Rough starting point calc is double the feet to yards for your 60yd and 80yd wedges and then add/subtract for elevation.  It gets you close, but as with anything, practice gets you honed in.

So a 23foot putt = 46yd wedge.  Always look at the green dots from reverse view and aim so your ball will head to the cup.  Wind never appears to be a factor in the shot.

Without doubt, for me it would be the 64 degree wedge, full power. On the green that club goes 29 / 30 yds with a neutral wind. With that wind, on that green i'd expect it to land around 26 / 27 yds, the roll out should take you close.

Just seen your update, good advise from Phil

My advice is to eat more haggis, sup some more Irn-Bru so you get your third closer. Come on Joanny........

Agreed however, wedge on the green is the only option......then run like hell when the greenkeeper runs after you...

Pity I never practice the wedges on a green.....never need to hit them    :))

    Wedge or putt?

One of the legitimate places to wedge on a green. It's not a known shot for me so I go by what I read here-double the yardage and hit it full, spin is a waste of time.  :-)

p.s., I have tried putting from there a number of times and it's possible to 2-putt but not unless you've seen it many times. The CTTH at SA has a similar version of this so you get an idea of what to expect.

    Agreed it is possible.

I was playing one day....my opponent came up short....do I elected to do the same. He used a wedge, got to about 8 feet.....I putted to about 6 feet......

We both made par......beats a DE any day.
