COUNTRY CLUB LEAGUE - SUMMER 2011 CUP
WINNERS - ELECTRA HOTTIES
25 July to 4 September
This was a summer cup for 6 weeks using the Swiss tournament system. This system aims to pit teams with the same number of wins against each other in every round. See the wikipedia entry for detailed information.
The plan was to draw the first two rounds using an accelerated pairings draw in pairing groups of 5 in order to keep mismatches to a minimum... see this guide for an idea of how it is done. In Italian. After that, the draw is open and you will be most always drawn against other teams with the same number of wins.
For those who really want to geek out and do mock draws to try and figure out who they might get, I am using the Sevilla software package to generate the draw in each round.
The standings after the end of the sixth week are final.
It is not technically a run of the league, I am only calling it a cup, so places in the league divisions that you earned in the winter will not be affected.
A league game will, as before, be composed of 5 singles matches (match play) of 9 holes with pre-determined course and conditions. Each league week will run as follows:
- A course will be designated with tees and conditions one week in advance. All matches will be run as match plays in practice mode using these conditions, and not in scored mode.
- Teams will have from Friday 12:01am to Monday 11:59pm WGT time to submit lineups for the following week.
- Using only teams that submitted a lineup for that week, I will pair teams according to the rules of the system and release the matchups by Tuesday 11:59pm WGT time. If there is an odd number and your team does not have a game, your team is given an automatic win for that round.
- Each player that you submit is assigned to a specific match (1,2,3,4,5) and they will play the player on the other team assigned to that match. In the interest of fairness, I have hidden the lineups until I make the pairings.
- Substitutions are allowed at any time. Everyone would like to see the matches played, so if you have a player who can't find the time, bring someone else in. Teams should, however, should do this in the right spirit (I don't want to find out that you are intentionally holding better players back to use as substitutions.)
- Teams will have up to Sunday 11:59pm WGT to complete their matches and submit a result. Results not submitted will be declared a "no result". Any games where one team has not won at least 3 matches will also be declared a "no result" (e.g. reporting a 2-1 win with 2 unplayed matches will not be recorded as a win. However, matches played will still be counted towards their individual ranking.).
- All matches are played to a finish using extra holes if necessary.
Seeding was, in the first instance, based on last winter's final league standings here. Some teams earned a seeding through previous matches against other country clubs.
For those who are wondering "what are those abbreviations in the standings"?
Score = number of wins + additional point for a bye
Bhlz = Buchholz score, a measure of strength of schedule by totalling the scores of your opponents. (first tiebreaker). If you miss a round or have a game declared a no result because of unplayed matches, a game against yourself is counted towards your Buchholz score.
Minorsc = Number of singles matches won and lost (next tiebreaker)
BhCt = Buchholz contribution. What your opponents get added to their strength of schedule should they have played against you. If you play every round, this will be equal to your score. If you miss a round, see above under Bhlz.
Nr = player number which is your given seed or one randomly given to you by the computer if you were unseeded.
(The headings Rtg and TPR in the individual rankings table are not used as I am not seeding individuals.)
Big applause to briobrio, the Electra owner who is filling out the game cards. And a bow for bootsnbra of newcomers Ruff-N-Rowdy who is your results scorer. She'll be updating the website now and then during the week from your results submissions (do let us know, if your match goes to extra holes, the total holes of the match including the regulation 9).
Round 1 (Accelerated round)
Course and Conditions: Oakmont Front 9, Default Hole Locations, White Tees, Fast Greens, Moderate Wind
Round 2 (Accelerated round)
Course and Conditions: Kiawah Back 9, Default Hole Locations, Championship Tees, Very Fast Greens, Low Wind
In general, for seeded teams the draw paired you if you won in round 1 with a team that lost in the group ahead of you, but there was some jigging around with missing teams. For unseeded teams, generally teams who won in round 1 were paired together, and conversely those who lost were paired together. See links on accelerated pairings above if you wish to study a degree course in tournament management.
Round 3 (Normal round)
Course and Conditions: Bethpage Front 9: Medium Hole Locations, Blue Tees, Very Fast Greens, High Wind
Round 4 (Normal round)
Course and Conditions: St Andrews Front 9, Easy Hole Locations, White Tees, Fast Greens, Moderate Wind
Round 5 (Normal round)
Course and Conditions: Congressional Front 9, Default Hole Locations, Blue Tees, Fast Greens, Moderate Wind
Final Round (Normal round)
Course and Conditions: Congressional Back 9, Default Hole Locations, Champ Tees, Very Fast Greens, Low Wind
