Fringe Play Stat Question

  So, if on my approach I land on the fringe, I correctly missed a green in regulation. However, it looks like WGT is counting a putt from the fringe as a putt. The type of club I use from the fringe should be irrelevant and that should not count as a putt, IMO and per PGA rules, if i'm not on the green.

  Seems like double stat penalty for fringe play. Are other folks experiencing this and/or am I crazy to think its odd?

  You are o.k.

  Once you putt from the fringe, the stats will be split. Your scorecard will show this putt as a putt while the game stats (and the overall stats I suppose) will not.

  Whether you see it as odd or as a penalty is solely up to you though.

  I made a 110 foot putt from the fringe and it didn't get counted as my longest putt because I was told that it originated from the fringe...and thus was not considered a putt.

  Now...with that being said, remember that a "putt" doesn't deplete ball life whereas a chip or pitch does.  So over time I guess that will add up to something.

  As for why they count it as a putt from the fringe in some ways vs. others...I guess we'll need to hear from a mod.

  Nitpickingly, only a putt from the green is non-depletive.

  I would wonder why the heck the scorecard isnt accurate then.

  And I do think it odd from a conceptual standpoint. IMO, a missed green in reg is mutually exclusive with a counted putt. Which also squares with the USGA's interpretation of the rules.

  Perhaps it should be remembered that we don't play to either R&A or USPGA rules but WGT's version thereof.

  That's true. And I need that reminder when I find inconsistencies. Seems an odd departure from the USPGA rules though.

  Methinks that the Rules of Golf do not count putts on the green, nor on the fringe. They only count the strokes to the hole.

  I think they certainly discern stroke types for purposes of stat tracking. And I know that if a ball is on a fringe, it is not counted as a putt regardless of the club used.
