it would be good to know what percent of the time people hit the ding, then we know if it was a meter spike or bad timing lol.

I'd estimate a good round for me would be 7 out of 10 times, normal about 4 or 5 out of 10.

99% of the time it is a timing issue for me.

Don't exactly know to be honest, I would be amazed if it's more than 50% though, probably more like 40%.

Not a fair question, gordon. There is benefit from not hitting the ding and a lot of players do it on purpose. For me, missing by a pixel or two (the thickness of the ding line) is as good as a ding most of the time.

Forgot to say the misses are almost entirely down to me, very rarely a meter issue. The majority of my misses are within a mm or so of the ding, rarely enough to get into real trouble.

I've had a few really big time misses when the meter does a triple-jump but that's just part of the game. I've had a few seriously bad shots in reality too.

Good discussion about this topic in a past thread found here.

Agree ,  then of course club precision and forgiveness are 2 factors that Gordon isn't considering in this equation. To ding or not to ding ?....and  once again , I like a little of both.

I try to hit the ding in the majority of the shots I play, obviously hitting it usually means a good shot, assuming you have a grasp of how to judge distance and play the wind.

That said, I think a lot of players place too much emphasis on hitting it, as a judge of how well they are playing. As long as you are near to it, the resultant shot can still be fine and sometimes very good also.

For me it is far more important to ding your putts, assuming you play to ding them. That is always the difference between a very good round, decent or average. The number of holed 10 to 25 feet putts makes or breaks a round.
