Ok... so I've been playing for a while, and never cared about my Tier or average. Now after playing for a while, I decided to work hard to go from Master to Tour Master. I came up with a system based on info about saturation, etc.

I am a Master and started 4 days ago with a 69.85 average. Knowing I need to get down to a 63 average, I came up with a system.

Within 4 days I am down to 64.88.

Here's what I don't understand... and I'm sure the WGT won't share the info. I write software for a living so know that their are set rules for pretty much every variable.

When I was at a 66 average... a 3 under par 9 hole game would drop my average by .05 and a 4 under would drop it .10. As I got lower, that formula seemed to change. My thinking is until you reach a 64.0 average, nothing should change. -3 should stay .05, 14 should stay .10, etc. I'm basing that off of a par 72 course.

However... once I got down to the low 65's, a -3 started only dropping me .03, and now that I'm under 65, just .02

Anyone understand or know the average calculations as your average lowers? I should have kept track and charted it.

    ROTFL!

And try to understand the nonlinear principle of saturated averages...

Apparently, it's not the only thing you have trouble keeping track of.

And maybe that -3 is meaningless.  Assuming you are talking about nine holes, hard to tell from your history :-)), what will matter to your average is the 31-34 (62-68) that could represent in a ranked round.

I'm at 64.2 and the only scores that affect my average are 32s or less, I don't know exactly the percentages are but looking at my chart. I've go to shoot 6-32s to get to 64 even. I use a replacement chart, when I made Master, I took my first 40 ranked rounds and kept replacing the higher scores with my lower scores. I now have 6- 33s I need to convert to 32s or less but my putter went south and I refuse to buy any more high priced balls.

    Good Luck

    Some hints:

    - be sure to save all strokeplay rounds from your score history (it holds only 200),

    - take the actual scores played in the current tier into average calculation:
    71 is 71, 34 for nine is 2*34=68.

    - disregard any scores from Par3s, Par5s and CC custom courses,

    - calculate the average like you learned at school: added scores divided by number of scores.

    - once you reach "saturation" (the minimum number of rounds in your tier (40 as a Master)), you have to select the (40) lowest scores and calculate the average from these numbers. This means that the average can only lowered(!) by scores lower than the highest in the mix.

Or, you just don't care, play what you like and be a happy camper!

(to leer at the average may become a chore, especially in the next tiers)

    Have fun!!

Thanks for the reply. It helps make sense why my average kinda leveled out. I need to improve a little to get a few really low scores to make it start to move. Knowing it holds 200 rounds is good to know (not that I will really waste my time logging all my rounds). I just wanted to understand how average is calculated. There's other people who say there's other factors involved... so that could be interesting.

I have a 2nd part question. Is it better to play 9 or 18 hole ranked rounds? I've played well over 1,100 18 hole ranked rounds and only recently started playing 9 hole rounds more. Honestly, I tend to lose focus in an 18 hole round vs a 9 hole round. I've been -7 after 9 holes and then ended up at -3 or -4 in 18 hole rounds. Mostly missing 2 foot putts. Maybe I just suck at putting. But, I do know there's a little burnout after all the rounds I've played.

I do wonder how some people achieve Legend status or higher with a third of what I've played. I guess they are just MUCH better than me, and probably bought the best clubs they could for their level from the beginning. Not sure what has worked for them.
