I have a question concerning what adders should be used in different rough conditions.

First cut. Second cut. And the corresponding percentages listed.

There has to be an established system or method.

    Can anyone share advice?

I'm sure somebody will be along with spreadsheets and charts and slide rule functions to answer your question but what has worked for me over the years is simple-30-40, add a club; 40-50, add 2; 50-60 or worse, punch out to the closest part of the fairway.  :-)

The rough is notorious as the home of the puff adder. A warthog roaming the rough and brush is the perfect answer .

    What I use:

20-25%     Multiply the distance by 1.03

    30-40%     Multiply by 1.11

    40-50%     Multiply by 1.20

An alternative one I've seen here on the forums:

    20-30%     Multiply by 1.03

    25-35%      1.07

    30-40%      1.12

    40-50%      1.23

Forget charts, formulae etc. etc. YankeeJim's advice is as good as you can get. That's exactly what I do, and it works very well.

Except of course when you catch a flier. Stuff happens.

Only exceptions are from close in with wedges. A punched wedge will usually get you there from 30-40 with not much distance loss.

    +1 to Jim's advice.

The only thing I would add is that from 40-50 rough, I sometimes punch with topspin. But it has to be a clear shot to the green ahead (i.e. no fairway bunkers or green-side bunkers that I would need to clear). For the club, I go by feel, but it will always be at least one club up.

    ALL,

Thanks for advice. I appreciate it. I will try it.

Am I to assume that %age is key and disregard 1st or 2nd cut?

    0-60y>   20/25 - 1.03,  30/40 - 1.07,  40/50 - 1.125  (or just hit it for given distance - due to roll out adjustment).  50/60 I use 1.4.  60/70 1.5.  Anything in the brush add 10% to the given %'s.

Things tend to change more with different distances (although not always, gotta love it!).  A 95y shot from 20/25 would be 1.02% (+2).  A 100y shot from 30/40 would still be 1.07.  A 100y from 40/50 would be 1.18%.

That % is how much of  the ball is buried.
