    2nd shot st Andrews 1st hole 45 yds from  hole  with 20 wind  behind me  hit it  to go about  40yds  dropped 20yds straight in to the water,  can some please explain how that can  be

    Quite easy to explain. just as you were about to take your shot the wind dropped.

    I'm quite certain that you probably hit your approach shot longer than 20 yards...The distance from the pin to the edge of the water about 9 yds...That means that you needed to carry your approach at least 36 yards to clear the "Swilcan Burn"..( the burn is about 2 yards wide..)

    Anyway, fyi, the wind doesn't really help a short shot of only 40 yards..It certainly won't help you gain an extra 5 yards ( more than 10% of the total distance)..

    Despite being downwind, I would still play for a 45 yard shot with full backspin..

    I have also read here in the forum that a tail wind with a short shot can actually knock your ball down and not let it reach it full height trajectory which equals less distance.

    That happens on non-virtual golf courses too...
