    Hello all members

i just leveled up to 85 the first thing I did besides going to DISNEY LAND Ibought CALLAWAY steelhead XR

my question is about matching the right balls for these irons I also bought Cleveland 588 56,60,64 wedges (great clubs) I know there's a lot of balls out there and I also know that there are golf balls that match better with different

so here I am asking the pros who have much more experience than I only playing for 6 months so could anyone or more please give me some advise on this matter

    thank you all so much

There`s nothing carved in stone its all about what you want . L33+ Cally balls is a good start and then the rest is trial and error . Do you want a fast or slower meter ? More or less spin and then there`s distance also .

Next comes the question what type of player are you ? Are you playing for fun or for credits ? Majority of players who play for credits are using high end nike balls 500 + credits . If you are playing just for fun but want to post good scores , just find a ball that makes you happy .

So for fun try the Cally line and for credits either high end nike or Volviks . If credits are a problem for fun play try the WGT line . The Tour SD at 65 credits is a good ball just for fun play very enjoyable .

Another cheaper WGT ball you can try is the Tour GI-S ball. I played it almost exclusively until Legend. Sure I tried the Callaways and Nikes when they cane out but kept going back to the Tour GI-S ball until I needed  the slower meter speed of the better balls after I made legend and hit 68 about the same time.

And for all players don't fall too much in love with the Nikes because they are not going to be here forever, Eventually all Nike ball inventory will run out in real life and when it does look for WGT to remove the Nike balls at that time.

The level 33 Callys are probably the most popular ball on WGT, but for my money the Volviks offer the most "bang for the buck. A little more expensive, but longer, more spin and slower meter:

The great thing about the Volviks is that they almost exactly match the distance rating of my clubs, making it easier to get closer to the hole.

When you can consistently shoot -3/-4 under every 9 holes (non-red-tee)you can think about moving up to a better ball such as the Callaways.  At 73 average you're wasting $$ spending anything more than $1.00 a sleeve.

In the meantime enjoy and learn the game while saving $$ ;)

"most" may be true for your preferences - granted!

But, in numbers, it's not the case.

The volvics' price is 160% of the Callies' price (400 / 250), which I find a steep difference, and the numerical gain (which I would not use to compare items) is negative:

    L33 Callies cost: 22 cr/dot, the Volvics cost a lot more,  29 cr/dot.

    Nevertheless, I'm gonna try them!

I liked the Volviks that week I tried them.

While we're on the subject, I think someone may have some input on the comparison between the Volvick (51 and/or 53) against the Nike 48(?)

They are similar in spec and price, just wondering how the high level equipment responds to these 3 choices.

I use the Callaway Chrome Soft Balls (L43+). They are the same price as the 33s. You give up .5 durability but gain .5 in distance. Worth it. I've tried more expensive balls but always return to the Callaway 43.

Lonnie always gives great advice.  I'd add when changing clubs, always start with a ball you know.  Every ball/club combination acts a little differently.  Study how the clubs work with the known ball, and then select a new ball on what you need (as Lonnie said).  Remember if you change balls, your putter will also act differently with the new one.  Once you've settled on a (new) ball, map your club distances, learn what happens in wind, and how putts respond to varying speeds and breaks.  It's a lot of work, but pays off in strokes.

BTW, I'm not a "for credit" player, and my base ball is the Cally L33, although I'm currently working with the Nike L81.

    Cheers, --Berto

I've been a big L33 Callaway ball fan for many years but when I switched to the Callaway Apex irons I found them pretty inconsistent, a lot more so than when I played with Nike Vapor irons, supposedly the same spec as the Cally irons.

I did consider the L48 Nike ball but decided against as it will surely be removed from the pro shop at some point and then I'll have to seek a new ball again.  I had a go with the Volvik and love them.  They play really consistently, way better than the Cally ball.

There is obviously a price difference, 250 v 400 a sleeve but I'm playing a lot less these days so the game isn't costing me any more than it used to.

Anyone thinking about trying them should do so, you might be pleasantly surprised.
