    Hello,

I just purchased the L59 G25's.  Mostly because of all the hype.  I researched and the truth is that most low scorers below the 85-90 level do play the Pings.  They claim that the high trajectory is what you want etc.  Ive been using the Ping for a while...but I keep thinking that I should have waited for the Callaway Apex L64 Irons.

I would love for someone that ACTUALLY owns the Apex L64 irons to comment on them.  There are no reviews and almost no comments by anyone in the forums in regard to those clubs. They all keep raving about the Ping's...again, I understand the high trajectory...and they are definitely more accurate clubs than my old L33 R11's.  But forgiving they are not.  I played the Apex on a rental and scored better without even trying.

I wonder if the Ping's are also more popular because of the price...at least a little.  Anyway, any comments on the Callaways would be greatly appreciated.  Im sure that many of us have considered them but have not taken the plunge because of lack of info.

I thank you in advance for your comments.  Kind regards...

The big difference between the Ping L59 and the Callaway L64 is the trajectory. The Ping being high trajectory will stop quicker, compare to L64 ( med trajectory) will roll few more yards. I had the Ping L59, I struggled with the wind calculation, and the forgiveness was minimal. I think if you pair them with little slower meter ball, and figure out the wind effect, you will like them. Medium Trajectory like the L64, doesn't get affected much by wind, but it won't stop quickly, like the Ping does.

Since those Callys are new, finding someone who has them may be hard.  They replaced a Nike set with similar spec, and a 3.5 meter.

I did play those Nike's on a free rental weekend quite a while ago.  I found that on dinged shots the Pings were better.  Approach shots to greens would hold better than the Nike's did.  However, on off ding shots, accuracy suffered some compared to the Nike's.

Hope that helps, and perhaps someone who has used both of those iron sets will pass on some info.

    Good Luck,

Like Phred, I played the old Nikes on a free rental weekend (we need more of those). I found that despite low trajectory, they still held the greens pretty well. The precision aspect of those clubs is something I could live with (even as a level 87 legend); however, they just weren't as versatile as the Pings. I would stick with the pings, as they provide a more premium experience on long or uphill approaches.

Plus, the feel of the pings, especially in the wind, will give you an easy transition to the high level irons.

This very debate has been going on in our club over this past week, as one of our members is trying to decide between these two sets.  We've got guys who play each of these sets, and nobody has a bad word to say about either one.  Really, I think it comes down to personal preference as to whether or not you prefer a high ball flight.

We have guys in our club who shoot stupid low scores with both of these sets.

    Hello.

I have had experience with both the clubs you mentioned, so I'll share my thoughts.

The L59s really do have a lot of hype around them; rarely will anyone tell you to wait for sometging better. With that, I bought them and loved them. For one thing, they are a great stepping stone into all the other high trajectory clubs; I'm sure you are getting some good experience with wind aiming:-)

I didn't try the Callaway Apex irons, but I did try the old Nike equivalent. Despite the low trajectory, I found they stopped suprisingly well. They were also a tad more forgiving than the Pings since they didn't travel as high.

I'd think you should continue with your Pings, simply because the trajectory makes them more versatile. Long irons more manageable, uphill approaches more consistent.

    Have fun!

    It is

I notice you are using the starter ball (usually?? I never checked). Some way better balls are quite cheap (L33 Cally is cream for here)............

    Thanks for all your comments.

The starter ball is horrible.  I’ve been using either the Tour SD or the Srixon Z-Star.  I have not tried the Cally L33, although I probably should.

I did map the Pings.  They are very consistent and super accurate in regard to distance. However if you miss the ding by a hair the penalty is noticeable. Very severe if you miss by just a bit.  Well, it would also depend on our standards, but if you aim to be one or two yards from the flag you have to hit the ding.  The wind has not been a problem for me.

The Callaway’s numbers are better in regard to precision and forgiveness.  Since I’m at level 72, and better clubs won’t come up until much later (L85), I was considering changing to the L64 Cally’s, which are more foregiving.

If the meter is a problem, you might consider the WGT G12-S and G13-S balls.  The meter on the L33 Cally is the same as the G13-S.  They are 2.0 and 2.5 respectively.

The big difference between the Cally L64 and the Pings is the high trajectory of the Pings.  I don't know how many rounds you have played with the Pings yet, but it will take a while to adjust to any new clubs, especially new irons.  As I said, if you are missing the ding by a touch, consider one of the slower balls I listed.

I felt that the high trajectory was more important when I bought them, as it helps reduce roll out.

    Good Luck,
